Simisage official artwork

Simisage is a Grass-type Pokémon, the Thorn Monkey Pokémon, number 512 (#0512) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the Unova region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 30.5 kg.

Simisage is the Thorn Monkey Pokémon, an ill-tempered brawler that swings a tail covered in thorns at its enemies. The leaves on its head are very bitter, quite unlike the soothing sprout of the Pansage it grew from.

Lore

Biology

Simisage is a green monkey with a pointed, bushy crest like a pompadour and broad ears. Furry white eyebrows and shoulder tufts frame a cream face, and its chest, hands and feet are cream too. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 30.5 kg. Its long tail ends in leaves and is lined with tiny sharp barbs, so it works like a club.

Behaviour

The Pokédex describes Simisage as ill tempered and even wild tempered, and says it attacks by flailing its thorny tail in wild swings. The leaf on its head tastes very bitter.

Habitat

Canon gives no natural habitat, and in Black and White it is reached only by evolving Pansage. In Legends: Z-A, Bulbapedia places it in Wild Zone 20, where it is an Alpha Pokémon.

Powers

Gluttony is its regular Ability and Overgrow is hidden. Seed Bomb is a move it knows from the start, and TMs add Solar Beam, Brick Break and Focus Blast. With base Attack and Special Attack both at 98 and Speed 101, it can hit hard from either side.

Name origin

Simisage may combine 'simian' with 'sage', a herb or a wise person. The Japanese name is Yanakkie (ヤナッキー), which may draw on yanagi (willow), yasai (vegetables) or na (greens), plus 'monkey'.

Design inspiration

Simisage appears to blend a monkey and a tree. Its pompadour-like crest may nod to the bōsōzoku biker subculture, which borrowed the 1950s greaser look. With its thumb up, it seems to stand for 'speak no evil' in the three wise monkeys motif. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Simisage evolves from Pansage when a Leaf Stone is used on it, and it does not evolve further.

In the games

In Black and White, where it first appeared, a Leaf Stone on Pansage is the only way to get a Simisage. In Legends: Z-A it is wild in Wild Zone 20, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose. It is not in Scarlet and Violet.

In the anime

Angus's Simisage debuted in 'The Clubsplosion Begins!' and lost to Ash's Scraggy in the first round of the Clubsplosion. Several Simisage appear in 'The Legend of the Ninja Hero!', one of them guarding the Ninja Village.

Fun facts

  • In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's data its level-up learnset has only four moves, all at level 1.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, the Striaton brothers' three monkeys evolved with a Leaf Stone, Fire Stone and Water Stone during their fight with the Shadow Triad, in the chapter 'Something Suspicious'.
  • Bulbapedia notes that in Pokémon GO each of the three Simi monkeys is generally exclusive to one region: Simisage to Asia-Pacific, Simisear to Europe, India, Africa and the Middle East, and Simipour to the Americas and Greenland.
