Lore
Biology
Poipole is 0.6 m tall and weighs 1.8 kg. It is a small purple creature with a big head, short limbs and a long tail, three spikes on its head (front and both sides) and a face that glows cyan. Bulbapedia says its big head holds a luminous, sticky poison that it sprays through the needles, and that it can understand human speech once it has spent enough time around people.
Behaviour
In the anime Poipole can shoot a harmless multicoloured substance to paint with and to communicate, and it stands upside down and spins rapidly when it is happy.
Habitat
In the games its home is Ultra Megalopolis, though in the anime it comes from an unnamed world. It is not available in Scarlet, Violet or Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Its Ability is Beast Boost, which raises its best stat when it knocks out a Pokémon. It knows Dragon Pulse from level 1, plus Fell Stinger, Venoshock, Poison Jab and Nasty Plot later on. With its stats spread so evenly, it is a balanced but modest Poison type.
Name origin
Poipole is 'poison' plus 'pole', as its designer has confirmed, and may also echo 'purple' or 'tadpole'. The Japanese name is Bevenom (ベベノム), from 'baby' or 'bébé' and 'venom', again according to the designer.
Design inspiration
James Turner designed Poipole and Naganadel. Bulbapedia says Poipole is modelled on a bee larva, citing a post by Turner that is now a dead link, and that its needles resemble the plunger of a syringe.
Evolution notes
Poipole evolves into Naganadel when it levels up while knowing Dragon Pulse, which it already knows from level 1. It and Naganadel are the only Ultra Beasts with an evolutionary line.
In the games
Poipole is a gift Pokémon given to you late in the story of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, its first games. Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra also gives you one, from the Dynamax Adventure attendant in the Max Lair.
In the anime
Ash's Poipole debuted in 'The Professors' New Adventure!' travelling through an Ultra Wormhole, and he caught it in 'Love at First Twirl!'. It left his team in 'Securing the Future!' and returned in 'Z-Move Showdown!' already evolved into Naganadel.
