Naganadel official artwork

Naganadel is a Poison/Dragon-type Pokémon, the Poison Pin Pokémon, number 804 (#0804) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the Alola region. It is 3.6 m tall and weighs 150 kg.

Naganadel is the Poison Pin Pokémon, a wasp-and-dragon Ultra Beast whose swollen abdomen holds both its brain and a huge store of sticky poison. Bulbapedia says its stinger can spit that poison more than 9.6 km (6 miles).

Lore

Biology

Naganadel is 3.6 m tall and weighs 150 kg. A slender, dragon-like upper body with a long neck, grey shoulder spikes, pinkish claws and purple wings sits on top of a wasp's abdomen. Bulbapedia says that lower half houses its brain and ends in three hollow stingers connected to it, so it reacts violently if they are touched. The Pokédex says it stores hundreds of litres of poisonous liquid, and that the glowing venom it fires is immensely adhesive.

Behaviour

In the anime Naganadel lives in a nest and leads large groups of Poipole. It can talk to people through telepathy and share visions of the past with them.

Habitat

It shares Poipole's home world, according to the games. It is not available in Scarlet, Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Ability is Beast Boost, which raises its best stat when it knocks out a Pokémon. With Special Attack 127 and Speed 121 it is a fast special attacker. It uses Dragon Pulse, Air Slash and, from level 70, Dragon Rush, plus Venoshock, Nasty Plot, Fell Stinger and Poison Jab, so both of its types get coverage.

Name origin

Naganadel joins Nāga with the German Nadel ('needle'), as its designer has confirmed. The Japanese name is Agoyon (アーゴヨン), from ago (jaw) and yon (four), again according to the designer.

Design inspiration

James Turner designed Naganadel. It may blend a Western dragon or wyvern with a wasp's abdomen, perhaps a tarantula hawk or an ichneumon wasp, and its Shiny colouring may recall a yellowjacket. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Naganadel evolves from Poipole when it levels up while knowing Dragon Pulse.

In the games

Naganadel is what you get by evolving the Poipole you are given in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, its first games. Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra also lets you evolve one.

In the anime

Naganadel debuted in a dream in 'The Shape of Love to Come!' and appeared in person in 'The Prism Between Light and Darkness!', where it told the Ultra Guardians how its home world was plunged into darkness. Ash's Poipole turned out to have evolved into one when they reunited in 'Z-Move Showdown!', and it signed back onto his team the following episode for the exhibition match against Professor Kukui.

Fun facts

  • In every European-language version of a promotional trailer for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, a Naganadel is sent out from a Beast Ball, although the games give it only in a standard Poké Ball.
  • Its Speed of 121 is the only base stat among the Ultra Beasts that is not a prime number, though it is a prime power (11 squared).
  • Pokémon Masters EX has a seasonal Naganadel sync pair with Iris, from Fall 2022.
