Lore

Biology

Stakataka stands 5.5 m tall and weighs 820 kg. It is made of dark grey stone blocks stacked into a four-sided tower with a thin leg at each corner, and each block has a glowing blue eye on its underside that turns red when it is angry or fighting. The Ultra Sun entry says it seems to be many life-forms stacked on top of one another, and Bulbapedia says its legs can snap a tree in two.

Behaviour

To sleep, Stakataka plants itself on the ground and passes for a building. The Ultra Moon entry describes the brute behind moving, attacking stone walls turning out to be this life-form. Bulbapedia says it can shape its blocks into legs, and can part its body to let attacks pass or to shut foes inside.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it appeared from an Ultra Wormhole. It is not available in Scarlet, Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Ability is Beast Boost, which raises its best stat when it knocks out a Pokémon. Its base Defense of 211 is the highest of any Steel type, ignoring Mega Evolutions, per Bulbapedia, and its Speed of 13 is the lowest among all Pokémon able to learn Trick Room. It learns Iron Defense, Block, Wide Guard, Stealth Rock, Rock Slide, Iron Head and Double-Edge.

Name origin

Stakataka may blend 'stack' and 'attack'. The Japanese name is Tundetunde (ツンデツンデ), which may repeat tsunde (積んで, 'stacked').

Design inspiration

Stakataka resembles a castle tower. Bulbapedia suggests the yōkai Mokumokuren and Nurikabe, which live in or block the way as walls, and colonial organisms in which every brick works like one member of a colony. These are fan readings.

In the games

Stakataka is an Ultra Moon exclusive in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, its first games, found in Poni Grove, where Blacephalon fills the Ultra Sun slot. Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra later added it to the Max Lair.

In the anime

Stakataka debuted in 'The Long Vault Home!', emerging from an Ultra Wormhole at the Pokémon School around midnight. It went berserk when Viren topped it with a golden statue of himself, calmed down once Ash and Pikachu lifted the statue off, and was caught by Ash in a Beast Ball before being released to go home.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Phyco puts a single Stakataka at almost 150 brick-like creatures, but counting the stones in its design gives 137.
  • Its Pokédex height seems to be its size at rest, because standing on its legs it is shown nearly twice as tall as Guzzlord in Pokémon HOME.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Sun catches one with a Beast Ball and nicknames it Drachma.
