Lore

Biology

Pyukumuku is a black, ovoid echinoderm, 0.3 m (1'00") tall and 1.2 kg (2.6 lb), with beady pink eyes, a white star-shaped mouth, pink spikes and a fluffy white tail. The Pokédex says its slime lets it stay on land for days and can soothe sunburned skin.

Behaviour

Bulbapedia says Pyukumuku picks a spot it likes and stays there, even returning if moved. Many wash up on Alolan beaches, and the Pokédex says the tradition of 'Pyukumuku chucking' began with throwing them back into the sea. Touching its mouth or spikes is especially unwise, and Bulbapedia notes a partnership with Pelipper, which scoops it from the water and carries it.

Habitat

The Pokédex places it in warm, shallow seas, such as near a beach. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Ability Innards Out damages a foe that knocks it out, and its hidden Ability, Unaware, ignores the opponent's stat changes. With 130 base Defense and 130 base Special Defense it is a defensive wall. Its base Speed of 5 is the lowest of any Water type, tied with Shuckle and Munchlax as the lowest of all Pokémon.

Name origin

Pyukumuku may combine 'puke', 'cucumber' and 'mucus', and may nod to the Hawaiian word pūʻukuʻuku ('tiny'). The Japanese name is Namakobushi (ナマコブシ), from namako ('sea cucumber') and kobushi ('fist').

Design inspiration

Pyukumuku is based on a sea cucumber, some of which eject internal threads to put off predators. Its tail and 'ears' may recall the sea bunny, a sea slug popular in Japan from 2015. These are fan readings.

In the games

In Sun and Moon, where it debuted, you can surf into a Pyukumuku on Route 7 or Hano Beach. In Sword and Shield it appears around South Lake Miloch and in Max Raid Battles.

In the anime

A wild Pyukumuku debuted in 'Alola to New Adventure!', startling Ash underwater with a thumbs-up. Goh caught one in 'That New Old Gang of Mine!' while visiting Alola.

Fun facts

  • It is the only known Pokémon that can learn Purify.

  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate it is a Poké Ball summon that uses Innards Out when an opponent gets too close, then waves goodbye.
