Type: Null official artwork

Type: Null is a Normal-type Pokémon, the Synthetic Pokémon, number 772 (#0772) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the Alola region. It is 1.9 m tall and weighs 120.5 kg.

Type: Null is the Synthetic Pokémon, a man-made chimera whose heavy control mask exists to hold back its true power. The Pokédex says it was built for a specific mission, went berserk during an experiment and was frozen, and that the mask now keeps it under control.

Lore

Biology

Type: Null is a four-legged chimera that mixes features of many creatures: a thick grey mane, short black fur, insect-like green forelegs, scaly purple hind legs and a fish-like tail. It is 1.9 m (6'03") tall and 120.5 kg (265.7 lb). Its whole head is locked inside a brown helmet with an axe-shaped blade on top, with small grey eyes behind rectangular slots. Bulbapedia describes the helmet as very heavy and a drag on its agility, and the Sun Pokédex says it hides some special power.

Behaviour

The Pokédex warns that Type: Null might run wild, so its true power stays sealed away beneath the control mask. It is a restrained Pokémon rather than a calm one, and the Silvally entries suggest only a strong bond with a Trainer it trusts can change that.

Habitat

Type: Null has no natural habitat, since it was made rather than born. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its only Ability, Battle Armor, blocks critical hits. Its attacks come from many types, including Air Slash, X-Scissor, Iron Head and Tri Attack, which suits a Pokémon patched together from many creatures, and Imprison and Scary Face help it control a fight. It has 95 in every base stat except Speed, which the helmet drags down, so it is a durable all-rounder that evolving into Silvally finally sets free.

Name origin

The name is simply 'type' plus 'null' (nothing), which Bulbapedia presents as the name it goes by while wearing the helmet. The Japanese name is タイプ:ヌル (Type:Null), the same two words.

Design inspiration

Its design seems to draw on the chimera, and its patchwork history may echo Frankenstein's monster; Bulbapedia also sees its collar as a possible reference to the ring around Arceus. These are fan readings, apart from the Pokédex's own line that it was modelled on a mighty Pokémon of myth.

Evolution notes

Type: Null evolves into Silvally when it is levelled up with high friendship, which breaks its mask, as Silvally's Pokédex entries describe.

In the games

Gladion, a rival Trainer, keeps a Type: Null as his partner in Sun and Moon, where it debuted, and you are given your own after becoming Champion. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon have Wicke hand it over instead. Sword's Pokédex says a rumour blames stolen research notes for a new Type: Null being made in Galar, and in Sword and Shield a Macro Cosmos employee gives you one at the Battle Tower once you are Champion.

In the anime

Gladion's Type: Null debuted in 'Rising from the Ruins!', and it appears in pictures in Faba's laboratory in 'Deceiving Appearances!'.

Fun facts

  • Its English name contains a colon, which Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon's does.
  • Bulbapedia lists parallels with Mewtwo: both were made by humans through science, both were modelled on a Mythical Pokémon, and both went berserk.
  • Código Cero in Spanish and Tipo Zero in Italian: Bulbapedia notes it was the first species to differ from English in Spanish, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese alike.
  • With Cosmog and Cosmoem, it was among the first Legendary Pokémon able to evolve, and all three debuted in Sun and Moon.
