Lore

Biology

Silvally has Type: Null's body without the mask: a four-legged chimera, 2.3 m (7'07") tall and 100.5 kg (221.6 lb), with a silver coat, a mammal's head fitted with metal parts, a circular drive on each side of its head, bright silver eyes and a large axe-shaped crest. Bulbapedia notes that the crest now shows three white feathers the mask used to hide. Once the heavy mask is gone, the Pokédex says, its speed rises sharply.

Behaviour

Silvally's bond with its Trainer is the point of the Pokémon: the Pokédex says trust awakened the strength hidden inside it, and that this trust gave it the will to destroy its control mask. Bulbapedia says it goes back to a natural, wild temperament but stays extremely loyal, even risking its life to defend its partner.

Habitat

Silvally has no wild habitat, because the only way to get one is to evolve Type: Null. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Ability, RKS System, changes Silvally's type to match the Memory it holds, giving it a form for each of the 18 types, and its eyes, spikes, drives and fin all shift colour to match. Its signature move, Multi-Attack, takes the same type, and no other Pokémon can learn it. Silvally also learns Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt and Crunch, and with 95 in every base stat it fits almost any role.

Name origin

Silvally may combine 'silver' and 'ally', which would fit the Moon Pokédex line saying the boy who evolved it chose its name. The Japanese name is Silvady (シルヴァディ), which may combine 'silver' and 'buddy'.

Design inspiration

Like its pre-evolution, Silvally seems to be a chimera, and Bulbapedia sees a griffin in the winged look of the crest on its head. The bolt-like parts on its face may recall Frankenstein's monster, and a creature that changes type with a held item echoes Arceus. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Silvally evolves from Type: Null when it is levelled up with high friendship.

In the games

Gladion's Silvally is a minor character in Sun and Moon, where the species debuted, and the only way to get one in any game is to evolve a Type: Null. Gladion and Silvally are also a sync pair in Pokémon Masters EX.

In the anime

In 'Mission: Total Recall!', Gladion's Type: Null broke its confinement mask and evolved into Silvally to save Lillie. Bulbapedia's gallery shows it in the series as Dark, Fairy, Fighting, Fire, Rock and Steel Silvally.

Fun facts

  • Its jump in Speed from 59 to 95 is a reversal of the digits and the only stat that changes when Type: Null evolves, which Bulbapedia says makes it the evolution with the fewest individual stat changes.
  • With a Bug Memory, Silvally becomes what Bulbapedia calls the only Bug-type Legendary Pokémon.
  • Silvally is coded to learn all three Pledge moves in Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon, Sword and Shield, but Bulbapedia says a coding error leaves the Move Tutor offering only Grass Pledge.
