Lore

Biology

Quaxwell is a white duck with a pointed yellow beak, blue eyes and a round blue crest that droops towards the back. Blue and teal feathers decorate its chest, arms and tail, three feathers at the end of each arm work like fingers, and the wrapping around its yellow feet looks like ballet shoes. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 21.5 kg. Bulbapedia says its crest absorbs impacts and shields it from attacks, but a messy crest makes it feel unwell and weak, so it quickly combs the crest back into shape with gel.

Behaviour

Bulbapedia describes Quaxwell as serious and stoic, though also temperamental, and the Pokédex calls it hardworking. Flocks of them run through shallow water to train their legs, then compete to see who kicks most gracefully.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it does not appear in the wild and is obtained only by evolving Quaxly.

Powers

Quaxwell strikes with Aqua Jet, Water Pulse, Liquidation and Aqua Cutter, kicks with Low Sweep, and takes to the air with Wing Attack, Air Slash and Acrobatics. Its Ability is Torrent, with Moxie hidden. With base Attack 85 as its best stat, it is a physical attacker in the middle of its line.

Name origin

Quaxwell may combine 'quack', 'aqua', 'wax', 'well' and 'swell', and perhaps the name Maxwell. The Japanese name is Welkamo (ウェルカモ), possibly 'well' or 'swell' with kamo ('duck'), and 'well combed'.

Design inspiration

Quaxwell may be a crested duck or goose crossed with a ballet dancer, with the feel of carnival performers such as those of the Rio Carnival. Its crest and feathers also resemble a swimming cap and swimsuit, which could point to synchronised swimming, once called water ballet. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Quaxly evolves into Quaxwell at level 16, and Quaxwell into Quaquaval at level 36.

In the games

Quaxwell is the middle stage of the Water partner line, and in Scarlet and Violet, where it first appeared, you get one by evolving the Quaxly you chose as a first partner. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Dot's Quaxwell debuted in 'Dance, Quaxly! The Blue Medali Step!', after her Quaxly evolved during a Tera Training battle against Larry. It evolved into Quaquaval in 'Dot and Quaxwell Step it Up!'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia notes that Quaxwell ties with Bayleef as the tallest second-stage first partner Pokémon.
  • Pokémon Sleep says its daily training can leave it too tired to look after its crest, so it usually sleeps with a messy one.
  • Bulbapedia suggests that the link between crested geese and carnival performers may date from Roman times, when crested geese were sacred to the goddess Juno.
