Lore
Biology
Quaquaval is a humanoid waterfowl, 1.8 m tall and 61.9 kg, with dark blue plumage, a white head, neck and chest, and a large slick crest. Its arms end in three-feathered 'hands', and its yellow feet are made of rounded segments with three toes each. Teardrop-shaped water feathers, released from organs on its tail feathers, fan out behind its back and, Bulbapedia says, spin round its body like a buzzsaw when it attacks.
Behaviour
Quaquaval is a performer. The Pokédex says its dances mesmerise everyone who sees them, evoking places far away, and it uses its powerful, well-trained legs for both dancing and kicking.
Habitat
The Pokédex names no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it does not appear in the wild and is obtained only by evolving Quaxwell.
Powers
Its signature move is Aqua Step, a light, fluid dance that hits and raises its Speed; Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon can learn it. It also uses Wave Crash, Close Combat, Aqua Jet and Liquidation. Its Ability is Torrent, with Moxie hidden. With base Attack 120 it hits hard for a dancer.
Name origin
Quaquaval may combine quá-quá, Spanish and Portuguese for a duck's sound, with 'aqua' and carnaval ('carnival'), and it also echoes 'quaquaversal', meaning radiating in all directions, like its water feathers. The Japanese name is Wanival (ウェーニバル), possibly 'wave' and 'carnival'.
Design inspiration
Quaquaval may be mainly a peacock, since its water feathers work like a peacock's train, with some of the Iberian red-knobbed coot, a bird with lobed feet and a red head ornament. Its dancing and plumage recall the performers of Rio's carnival, and its Fighting type and Aqua Step may nod to capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that mixes in dance. These are fan readings, not official statements.
Evolution notes
Quaxwell evolves into Quaquaval at level 36.
In the games
Quaquaval is the final form of Quaxly, the Water choice among the first partner Pokémon, and in Scarlet and Violet, where it first appeared, you get one by evolving Quaxwell. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Dot's Quaquaval debuted in 'Dot and Quaxwell Step it Up!', when her Quaxwell evolved mid-fight with Iono's Bellibolt, and it Terastallized into a pure Water type before that episode ended.
