Raticate is a Normal-type Pokémon, the Mouse Pokémon, number 20 (#0020) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 0.7 m tall and weighs 18.5 kg.

Raticate is the Mouse Pokémon, a fast, large-toothed Normal type whose fangs, the Pokédex claims, can topple concrete buildings. It bites anyone who touches its whiskers, however friendly.

Lore

Biology

Raticate is a tawny rodent with a cream underside, 0.7 m tall and 18.5 kg, with ragged ears, large front teeth that never stop growing, short three-fingered arms and webbed, three-toed hind feet. Although often drawn upright it is a quadruped. The webbing works like flippers, so it can swim across rivers and, the Pokédex says, sometimes oceans.

Behaviour

Raticate relies on its whiskers for balance and slows down if they are trimmed. Its temper is fiercer than it looks: if attacked, Bulbapedia says, it rears up, bares its fangs and shrieks, and it gnaws on rocks, logs and even house walls to keep its fangs short.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list says Grassland, and Bulbapedia says plains and savannas. In the games Kantonian Raticate lives on Kanto's routes, while the Alolan form roams the wilds of Alola.

Powers

Raticate has Run Away and Guts, with Hustle hidden. It learns Hyper Fang, Crunch, Sucker Punch and Super Fang. Alolan Raticate is a heavier Dark and Normal type with Gluttony, Hustle and the hidden Thick Fat; a Totem Alolan Raticate wrapped in Z-Power ends Ilima's trial, and beating it earns Normalium Z. With 81 Attack and 97 Speed, Kantonian Raticate is a fast physical attacker.

Name origin

Raticate may combine 'rat' with 'eradicate' (to destroy) or 'masticate' (to chew). The Japanese name is Ratta (ラッタ), which may come from ラット (ratto), 'rat'.

Design inspiration

Raticate looks like a rat blended with other rodents, for example in the webbed feet of a muskrat or coypu. Alolan Raticate's greed, its command of Rattata and its feud with the detective-like Gumshoos recall a crime boss. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Raticate evolves from Rattata at level 20, and Alolan Raticate does so only at night.

In the games

In Moon and Ultra Moon, Alolan Raticate is the first Totem Pokémon you face, in Verdant Cavern; Sun and Ultra Sun use Gumshoos instead. Rival Blue uses a Raticate aboard the S.S. Anne, and Petrel uses one in Team Rocket's hideout in the Johto games. It first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), but Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Aboard the St. Anne, in 'Battle Aboard the St. Anne', Ash briefly traded his Butterfree for a Gentleman's Raticate and traded back as the ship began to sink. Alolan Raticate debuted in 'To Top a Totem!'.

Fun facts

  • Raticate is the only Pokémon whose National Pokédex number matches the level at which it is reached: Rattata evolves into number 20 at level 20.
  • Its Red and Green and Red and Blue sprites and artwork gave it four fingers on each front paw instead of three.
  • Before the Totem Raticate battle, the cutscene gives it Gumshoos's cry rather than its own.
