Registeel is a Steel-type Pokémon, the Iron Pokémon, number 379 (#0379) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the Hoenn region. It is 1.9 m tall and weighs 205 kg.

Registeel is the Iron Pokémon, a hollow giant whose body is harder than any known metal yet stretches and shrinks. Ancient people locked it away, and the Pokédex says its metal may not be from this planet.

Lore

Biology

Registeel is 1.9 m tall and 205 kg, a silver, mostly spherical robot with a disc-like lower half and black arms with three fingers each. Its black face is ringed by raised metal and carries seven red dots in a hexagon, and the backs of its hands show three red triangles. The Pokédex says its body is hollow and that tens of thousands of years of pressure underground tempered it until it could not be scratched.

Behaviour

Registeel keeps its secrets. A Sapphire entry says ancient people imprisoned it and that its metal is thought to be a substance not of this earth. A Shield entry says rumour holds that it was born deep in the planet's mantle and reached the surface 10,000 years ago, and Bulbapedia's summary of the legend says Regigigas made it from magma.

Habitat

The species data lists caves. Bulbapedia places its seal in Hoenn's Ancient Tomb and in the Iron Ruins in Galar's Crown Tundra. In Scarlet and Violet it can only arrive through Pokémon HOME or events, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

The Pokédex says no one has any idea what it eats.

Powers

Registeel has the Ability Clear Body, with Light Metal hidden. Its base Defense and Special Defense are both 150, and that makes it extremely hard to dent. It strikes with Iron Head, Flash Cannon and Steel Beam, can set Stealth Rock, and uses Iron Defense and Amnesia to become sturdier still.

Name origin

Registeel may combine the Latin regis ('of a king') with 'steel'. The Japanese name is Registeel (レジスチル).

Design inspiration

Registeel may be based on Hebrew golems, and given its metal body it could also be a humanoid robot. Bulbapedia suggests the five giants are themed after historical epochs, with Registeel standing for the Iron Age. These are fan readings.

In the games

Registeel is sealed in the Ancient Tomb in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, its first games, and only one can be caught. Pyramid King Brandon fields one when you take on his Silver Symbol challenge in Emerald.

In the anime

Brandon's Registeel debuted in 'Overjoyed!', where it beat Ash's Torkoal at the Battle Pyramid after a tough battle. In 'Chasing to the Finish!', Quillon catches one at Galar's Iron Ruins for Project Mew.

Fun facts

  • In the Kalos Pokémon League stage of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Ultimate, Registeel sometimes appears as a hazard and stomps so that the swords fixed in the stage fly upwards.
  • Bulbapedia says Registeel is the only legendary giant with no base stat reaching 200, and the only one whose Attack and Special Attack, both 75, are not multiples of 10.
  • Registeel shares both its Abilities, Clear Body and the hidden Light Metal, with the Beldum evolutionary line.
