Lore

Biology

Regice is 1.8 m tall and 175 kg. Its cyan body is built from angular, crystal-like blocks of Antarctic ice, with seven yellow dots set in a plus shape on its face and four spikes on its back. It floats, and its arms are pentagonal with three fingers each. A FireRed and LeafGreen entry says research matched its ice to the ice found at the South Pole, and Emerald says researchers believe it formed during an ice age.

Behaviour

Little is recorded about how Regice behaves; its cold does the work. One Pokédex entry says it spent thousands of years asleep inside a glacier, and its deep-frozen body will not melt even in magma. Bulbapedia says legend credits Regigigas with making it from ice-age ice.

Habitat

The species data lists caves. Bulbapedia places its seal in Hoenn's Island Cave and in the Iceberg Ruins in Galar's Crown Tundra. In Scarlet and Violet it can only arrive through Pokémon HOME or events, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Regice has the Ability Clear Body, with Ice Body hidden. Its base Special Defense of 200 is the highest of any Ice type, and its Special Attack of 100 backs up Ice Beam, Blizzard, Thunder and Focus Blast. Its Attack is a weak 50, so it fights almost entirely with special moves.

Name origin

Regice may combine the Latin regis ('of a king') with 'ice'. The Japanese name is Regice (レジアイス).

Design inspiration

Like the other giants, Regice may be based on Hebrew golems, and its angular body resembles naturally growing crystals. Bulbapedia suggests the giants are themed after historical epochs, with Regice standing for the Ice Age. These are fan readings.

In the games

Regice waits in Island Cave in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, its first games, and only one can be caught. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Gym Leader Candice may use one in the Battle Tower. In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness it is the boss you face in the Aegis Cave's Ice Chamber.

In the anime

Brandon's Regice debuted in 'Pace - The Final Frontier!', where Pikachu beat it after a tough match. In 'Leaping Toward the Dream!', Ash, Goh and Quillon meet a wild one on Mount Coronet, and Quillon's Urshifu beats it easily.

Fun facts

  • Regice shares its category with Avalugg: both are Iceberg Pokémon.
  • The international versions of Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald contain an unobtainable Regice Doll, which only a Japan-exclusive Regi-Dolls e-Reader card could unlock.
  • Brandon's Regice is never shown being caught on screen; the anime puts the capture somewhere between 'Overjoyed!' and 'Pinch Healing!'.
