Lore

Biology

Sableye is a dark purple biped, 0.5 m tall and 11 kg, with sharp teeth and claws that dig through soil. Its pale blue eyes are gemstones, and it has a red gem on its chest and more on its back. The Pokédex says substances from the rocks and gems it eats rise to its skin and crystallise, forming patterns that differ from one Sableye to the next.

Behaviour

Sableye is a quiet cave-dweller that lurks in the dark and is seen only rarely. It digs branching tunnels with its claws, and the Pokédex says Carbink is its favourite food, though Gabite usually grabs them first. Its gleaming eyes are why people fear it.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists Sableye as a cave Pokémon. In Scarlet and Violet it is found across Paldea, in places such as Alfornada Cavern and Dalizapa Passage, and in Tera Raids. In Legends: Z-A it appears in Wild Zones 9 and 20, and also in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

Diet

Sableye eats gemstones and the rocks that hold them, and the Pokédex says this diet has turned its eyes into jewels.

Powers

Sableye's Abilities are Keen Eye, which stops its accuracy being lowered, Stall, which makes it move last, and the hidden Prankster, which lets status moves go first. It strikes with Shadow Claw, Shadow Sneak, Foul Play and Knock Off, and can cast Will-O-Wisp. With Sablenite it Mega Evolves: the chest gem rips out and grows huge, and Mega Sableye hides behind it, using Magic Bounce, with 125 base Defense but only 20 Speed. The Pokédex says the gem turns back any attack, though its weight leaves Sableye open from behind.

Name origin

Sableye may combine 'sable' (the heraldic colour or the animal) and 'eye', and may also play on 'able-eyed'. The Japanese name is Yamirami (ヤミラミ), which may blend yami ('darkness') with urami ('grudge') or nirami ('glare').

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia suggests Sableye may be based on the Hopkinsville Goblin, a figure from a reported alien encounter in Kentucky whose features include glowing eyes, short legs, clawed hands and a swaying walk. Its red, blue and green gems may nod to Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, the games it first appeared in. These are fan readings.

In the games

Mega Sableye arrived in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Sableye first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire, where it was exclusive to Sapphire, with Mawile as its counterpart in Ruby.

In the anime

Ult's Sableye, which can Mega Evolve, appeared in 'Eyes to the Skies Once Again (Part One)' and has been his main Pokémon in Horizons since. A Sableye that can Mega Evolve also appears in the ending segment of 'Mega Evolution Special II'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia treats it and Mawile as counterparts: each totals 380 base stats, and they even give the same base experience.
  • Bulbapedia says that before the Fairy type arrived in Generation VI, Sableye and Spiritomb had no weaknesses at all.
  • It shares the Darkness Pokémon category with Murkrow and no one else.
  • In the Ruby and Sapphire manga, Sableye is Gym Leader Brawly's only known Pokémon, an odd pick for a Fighting specialist because Fighting moves cannot hurt a Ghost type.
