Lore
Biology
Sealeo is a bright blue, seal-like Pokémon with a speckled beige throat and chest, short tusks, dark oval eyes and a short, flipper-like tail. The Pokédex calls its thick white whiskers very sensitive, and its powerful front flippers can crush ice. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 87.6 kg.
Behaviour
Sealeo touches anything it meets for the first time with its nose and rolls it around to judge the smell and texture. Sometimes the object is a Spheal, which it balances on its nose to check that the youngster is healthy. The Sword Pokédex says Sealeo live on drift ice and track their prey by scent. Bulbapedia notes that the Sleep Style Dex shows it sensing its surroundings even while asleep.
Habitat
The Pokédex places Sealeo on drift ice and in the sea. It roams the Crown Tundra's Frigid Sea in Sword and Shield, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Thick Fat and Ice Body are its regular Abilities, with Oblivious hidden. It learns Brine, Aurora Beam and Body Slam by level, picks up Encore at level 35 and gets Surf at level 46. Base HP 90 makes it a sturdy halfway point, but base Speed 45 keeps it slow.
Name origin
Sealeo may combine 'sea' or 'seal' with the Latin leo ('lion'), as in sea lion. The Japanese name is Todoggler (トドグラー), possibly from todo ('Steller sea lion') and 'juggler'.
Design inspiration
Sealeo seems to be modelled on an earless seal with some walrus features, and its ball-balancing may refer to the trick sea lions perform with balls. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Sealeo evolves from Spheal at level 32.
In the games
In Ruby and Sapphire, where it first appeared, the only way to get a Sealeo is to evolve a Spheal. In Legends: Arceus it appears around Hisui's Obsidian Fieldlands and Cobalt Coastlands.
In the anime
Sealeo debuted in 'The Spheal of Approval' as Captain Stern's partner, sent out to battle Team Magma. Juan used one against Ash in his Sootopolis Gym battle in 'The Great Eight Fate!'.
