Lore

Biology

Sharpedo is a dark blue shark with a white underside, 1.8 m long and 88.8 kg, with yellow star-shaped scars on its snout and its rump. The Pokédex also says its fangs can rip through iron and sprout back straight away if they break, and that it cannot swim long distances.

Behaviour

Different Pokédex entries call it the bully, ruffian, bandit or gangster of the sea, and it reacts keenly to the smell of blood. The Moon Pokédex says its dorsal fin was once a prized food, and Sharpedo became a victim of overfishing.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list puts it in the sea. It cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it is in Bleu District's Wild Zone 10, where Bulbapedia marks one as an Alpha Pokémon, and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

Diet

Bulbapedia says it hunts Wailmer, mostly small ones, along with Finneon, Lumineon, Lanturn and Squirtle.

Powers

Its Ability Rough Skin hurts attackers that touch it, and Speed Boost is hidden. It bites with Crunch and Poison Fang, slashes with Night Slash and strikes first with Aqua Jet, using a base Attack of 120 that its 40 Defense cannot back up. Holding Sharpedonite, it Mega Evolves into Mega Sharpedo, 2.5 m long and 130.3 kg, with the Ability Strong Jaw and 140 base Attack. Its fangs become retractable nose horns that regrow countless times, and the games' official site claims it can top about 200 km/h (125 mph) in an instant.

Name origin

Sharpedo may combine 'shark', 'sharp' and 'torpedo'. The Japanese name is Samehader (サメハダー), which may come from samehada, 'shark skin', possibly a nod to Rough Skin.

Design inspiration

Sharpedo appears to be a great white shark missing its rear half, a shape shared by the ocean sunfish. Its Moon Pokédex line about its fin likely refers to shark finning, and Mega Sharpedo seems based on a sawshark or sawfish. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Sharpedo evolves from Carvanha at level 30.

In the games

Team Aqua's leader Archie uses a Sharpedo in Sapphire, Emerald and Alpha Sapphire, where it Mega Evolves into a form that arrived with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. In Sun and Moon it is the Ride Pokémon Sharpedo Jet, used to move faster through water and smash rocks in it. Sharpedo first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire.

In the anime

In 'Sharpedo Attack!', a pod menaced Ash and his friends until Brock healed their injured leader. In 'Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel', a Sharpedo that could Mega Evolve fell under Mega Wave control and fought Ash's team.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia treats Sharpedo and Camerupt as counterparts: both have 70 base HP and a base stat total of 460, and no other Pokémon shares their Mega forms' total of 560.
  • In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, surfing on a Sharpedo gives it its own model and twice the speed, but you cannot fish while riding it.
  • Players of the Ruby and Sapphire demo at Pokémon Festa 2002 began with a level 12 Sharpedo that had no Ability.
