Lore

Biology

Simipour is a blue monkey, 1.0 m tall and 29 kg, with dreadlock-like tufts on its head that store water, a white ruff around its neck and a tail tipped with a plume like a water spout. Its face, arms and legs are cream, and its hands have five fingers.

Behaviour

Simipour likes to stay where the water is clean. When the water stored in its tufts runs low, it sucks more up through its tail to top them off.

Habitat

Canon gives no natural habitat, and in Black and White it is reached only by evolving Panpour. In Legends: Z-A, Bulbapedia places it in Wild Zone 20, where it is an Alpha Pokémon.

Powers

Gluttony is its regular Ability and Torrent is hidden. Scald is a move it knows from the start, with TMs adding Surf, Waterfall, Ice Beam and Focus Blast. With base Attack and Special Attack both at 98 and Speed 101, it can attack from either side.

Name origin

Simipour may combine 'simian' with 'pour'. The Japanese name is Hiyakkie (ヒヤッキー), which may come from hiya ('cool water') and 'monkey'.

Design inspiration

Simipour appears to blend a monkey and a fountain. Its water-storing hair may recall the kappa, a Japanese yōkai that keeps water in a dish on its head, and the dreadlocks echo a hairstyle of the late 1960s and 1970s. It also seems to stand for 'see no evil' in the three wise monkeys motif. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Simipour evolves from Panpour when a Water Stone is used on it, and it does not evolve further.

In the games

In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, a Simipour is the relaxed principal of the school in Serene Village. Since its debut in Black and White, the only way to get one has been a Water Stone on Panpour. In Legends: Z-A it is wild in Wild Zone 20, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose. It is not in Scarlet and Violet.

In the anime

Betty's Simipour debuted in 'Search for the Clubultimate!' by beating Getty's Simisear in the Clubsplosion. It lost to Ash's Scraggy in 'A Clubsplosion of Excitement!'.

Fun facts

  • Even though its eyes look permanently shut, it seems to blink in the games.
  • In Black and White and their sequels, its sprites seem to strike poses that nod to rock-paper-scissors.
  • It represents February in the Unova horoscope.
  • Older official artwork painted its whole tail blue, rather than tan with a blue end.
