Lore

Biology

Skrelp is a brown, sea-dragon-like Pokémon, 0.5 m tall and 7.3 kg, with a purple face, a tubular upturned snout and leaf-like fins. A light blue growth hangs from the back of its head on a thin stem, and its tail is made of three leaf-shaped fins. The Pokédex says it looks so much like rotten kelp that it disappears among drifting seaweed.

Behaviour

Skrelp is a poor swimmer, so it clings to seaweed and rides it across the ocean, and storms can easily wash it away. The Pokédex says it sprays liquid poison at prey that wander close without noticing it. It gets on well with Dhelmise, and the Pokédex says the two are often found together in Alola.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it drifts in the ocean among floating seaweed. In Scarlet it swims in all four Paldean seas, while Violet players must trade for it. In Legends: Z-A it lives in the Sewers, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds Hyperspace Lumiose.

Diet

Rotten seaweed is its main food, which Bulbapedia says it turns into its poison.

Powers

Its Abilities are Poison Point and Poison Touch, which can poison on contact, and the hidden Adaptability, which raises its same-type bonus to 2×. It sprays Acid and Sludge Bomb, but its base Speed of 30 is the lowest of any Water type from Generation VI in poke.si data.

Name origin

Skrelp may combine scrawny and kelp, and may also involve scrap, as in scraps of seaweed. The Japanese name is Kuzumo (クズモー), which may come from mokuzu (seaweed scraps) or from kusamodoki (pseudo-grass).

Design inspiration

Skrelp looks like a common seadragon, also called a weedy seadragon, which is a seahorse relative. Its Poison typing and unhealthy colours may hint at polluted water. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Skrelp evolves into Dragalge at level 48, swapping its Water type for Dragon.

In the games

In Pokémon Y, its first game, Skrelp takes the bait of a Good Rod around Cyllage City and Ambrette Town. It later appeared in Shield's Expansion Pass and Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Skrelp first showed up in 'An Undersea Place to Call Home!', when Ash accidentally hooked one while fishing and Pikachu was left badly poisoned. The other Skrelp lived in the wreck of the S.S. Cussler.

Fun facts

  • Skrelp and Dragalge turn up only in Y, Omega Ruby, Ultra Moon, Shield's Expansion Pass and Scarlet, whereas their rivals Clauncher and Clawitzer live in X, Alpha Sapphire, Ultra Sun, Sword's Expansion Pass and Violet.
  • Bulbapedia says no Pokémon other than Skrelp and Dragalge brought the Poison type to Generation VI.
  • It can learn Dragon Pulse at level 40 even though it does not become part Dragon until it evolves.
