Slowbro is a Water/Psychic-type Pokémon, the Hermit Crab Pokémon, number 80 (#0080) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 78.5 kg.

Slowbro is the Hermit Crab Pokémon: a Slowpoke whose tail has been bitten by a Shellder. The Pokédex says the poison numbs its pain and sometimes gives it a brainwave that slips its mind an instant later.

Lore

Biology

Slowbro is a pink, upright Pokémon with a striped tan belly, vacant eyes and a Shellder clamped to its tail. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 78.5 kg. The Pokédex says the Shellder's shell twisted into a spiral as it tried to suck more sweetness from the tail, and that if the tail or the Shellder breaks off, Slowbro turns back into a Slowpoke.

Behaviour

Slowbro is lazy and spacey; the Sun Pokédex says it spends its time spacing out while gazing at the sea. It is peaceful despite its strong psychic attacks and usually avoids fights.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says Slowbro lives near ponds, lakes and seashores. In Scarlet and Violet it is found at Casseroya Lake and in West Province, and in Legends: Z-A in Wild Zone 11 with the Mega Dimension DLC adding Hyperspace Lumiose.

Diet

Since it cannot fish with its tail, Slowbro swims to catch prey, and the Shellder eats the leftovers.

Powers

Slowbro's Abilities are Oblivious and Own Tempo, with Regenerator hidden. It casts Psychic and Surf. Mega Slowbro, from Slowbronite, is swallowed by its Shellder so only its head, arms and tail show; it has Shell Armor and bounces on its tail like a spring. Galarian Slowbro is a Poison and Psychic type whose Shellder bites its arm, and squeezing the Shellder's tongue makes it fire poison with Shell Side Arm; its Ability Quick Draw is unique to it, and it cannot Mega Evolve. Base Defense 110 and Special Attack 100 make it a sturdy special attacker.

Name origin

Slowbro may combine 'slow' with 'bro', short for brother. The Japanese name is Yadoran (ヤドラン), which may draw on the same words as Yadon: 'hermit crab' (yadokari), 'parasitic host' (yadonushi) and 'dull' (don).

Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori designed Slowbro. It may be loosely based on hippos, giant otters and giant salamanders, while its shell and category point to hermit crabs. It also resembles the sazae-oni, a sea demon of Japanese folklore with a turban-shell. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Slowpoke becomes Slowbro at level 37, and Galarian Slowpoke with a Galarica Cuff. Despite what the Pokédex says, Bulbapedia notes that Shellder plays no part in Slowbro's evolution in the core series games.

In the games

Mega Slowbro arrived in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and Galarian Slowbro in The Isle of Armor. Slowbro debuted in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), where it can be caught on Route 23 and in Cerulean Cave with the Super Rod.

In the anime

Prima's Slowbro in 'The Mandarin Island Miss Match' helped Ash calm his Charizard and beat a Machamp. In 'Enlighten Up!' a Slowpoke evolved into Slowbro, beat Team Rocket with Confusion and returned a giant gold Slowpoke statue.

Whenever Shellder bites down hard on its tail, it gives Slowbro a flash of inspiration...which it forgets a moment later. (Moon)
