Lore
Biology
Spectrier is a black horse, 2 m tall and 44.5 kg, with a purple marking over the right side of its face, a closed left eye with thick mauve lashes and a wavy mane that fades to see-through tips. Its purple hooves are separate from the legs above them, and spectral mist trails behind the back two. Bulbapedia says its poor eyesight is made up for by four very sharp senses.
Behaviour
Spectrier prefers to be alone and quiet, and Bulbapedia says it is most active at night and attacks anyone who disturbs it. The Pokédex says it drains the vitality of anything asleep as it runs. Like Glastrier, it is said to have once ruled the Crown Tundra before Calyrex tamed it.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat. You get Spectrier at the Crown Shrine in The Crown Tundra if you grew a Shaderoot Carrot. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or from Pokémon HOME, or in The Indigo Disk on Glaseado Mountain after Snacksworth gives you a Spectrier Treat.
Diet
Bulbapedia says it is fond of carrots, especially Shaderoot Carrots, and of the Spectrier Treats that Snacksworth makes.
Powers
Its Ability is Grim Neigh, which raises its Special Attack each time it knocks out a Pokémon, and Bulbapedia says only Spectrier can have it. It learns Hex, Shadow Ball, Confuse Ray, Haze, Agility, Nasty Plot and Disable, and gets Poltergeist, Psychic and Calm Mind by TM. With 145 base Special Attack and 130 Speed it is a fast special attacker, but its Attack is 65 and its Defense 60. Calyrex can ride it to become Shadow Rider Calyrex.
Name origin
Spectrier may combine 'spectre' and destrier, a medieval war horse. The Japanese name Wraithpos (レイスポス) may blend 'wraith', rei (霊, 'spirit') and the Greek hippos for 'horse'.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia suggests Spectrier is based on the extinct Old English Black, a horse that fed into the Shire breed, with the ghostly mist round its hooves standing in for feathering. Its habit of draining sleepers may be a pun on 'mare', both a female horse and, in older folklore, a spirit that torments sleepers. These are fan readings.
In the games
Spectrier is a major character in Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra DLC, where it first appeared as Calyrex's shadowy steed. It appears in Pokémon Masters EX as a sync pair with Victor. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
Fun facts
- Its Attack and Special Attack are the reverse of Glastrier's: 65 and 145, against Glastrier's 145 and 65.
- Bulbapedia says it is the only pure Ghost-type Pokémon with no evolutionary relatives, which the game data confirms.
- In the manga Pokémon Adventures, an expedition lures it out by growing a Shaderoot Carrot in the Old Cemetery, and Calyrex later tames it again with the Reins of Unity.
