Glastrier official artwork

Glastrier is a Ice-type Pokémon, the Wild Horse Pokémon, number 896 (#0896) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Galar region. It is 2.2 m tall and weighs 800 kg.

Glastrier is the Wild Horse Pokémon, an Ice-type stallion that takes whatever it wants by force. The Pokédex says its ice mask is 100 times harder than diamond, and Bulbapedia says it once ruled the Crown Tundra until Calyrex tamed it.

Lore

Biology

Glastrier is a white horse, 2.2 m tall and 800 kg, with light-blue ice over its hooves and tail, a mane of ice spikes and an ice mask covering the left side of its face. The Pokédex says it has tremendous physical strength and gives off intense cold from its hooves. Bulbapedia adds that it is not fast, but it can freeze the ground and slide across it in a flash.

Behaviour

Glastrier is proud, arrogant and belligerent, and Bulbapedia says it prefers to serve whoever it judges strongest and loves to fight strong opponents. It terrorised people who entered its territory until Calyrex defeated it and tamed it with the Reins of Unity.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. You get Glastrier at the Crown Shrine in The Crown Tundra if you grew an Iceroot Carrot. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or from Pokémon HOME, or in The Indigo Disk on Glaseado Mountain after Snacksworth gives you a Glastrier Treat.

Diet

Bulbapedia says it is fond of carrots, especially Iceroot Carrots, and of the Glastrier Treats that Snacksworth makes.

Powers

Its Ability is Chilling Neigh, which raises its Attack each time it knocks out a Pokémon, and Bulbapedia says only Glastrier can have it. It learns Avalanche, Icicle Crash, Double Kick, Take Down, Thrash and Swords Dance, and the defensive Iron Defense. With 145 base Attack and 130 Defense but a Speed of only 30, it is a slow, heavy-hitting attacker. Calyrex can ride it to become Ice Rider Calyrex.

Name origin

Glastrier may combine 'glacier' and destrier, a medieval war horse. The Japanese name Blizzapos (ブリザポス) may merge 'blizzard' with the Greek hippos, meaning 'horse'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia suggests a unicorn (Scotland's national animal, and Scotland seems to be the Crown Tundra's model) and heavy draught horses such as the Clydesdale, whose big feathered hooves its icy ones may echo. Its Chilling Neigh may nod to the Icelandic nykur, a white water horse whose neigh is said to be the sound of cracking lake ice. It and Spectrier may also be the Horsehead Nebula near Orion. These are fan readings.

In the games

Glastrier has a major role in Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra DLC, where it first appeared, and is one of Calyrex's two possible steeds depending on the carrot you grow. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Fun facts

  • It shares one battle theme with Spectrier, 'Battle! (Glastrier / Spectrier)', composed and arranged by Junichi Masuda, in both Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet.
  • Bulbapedia says that, among the newcomers of The Crown Tundra, only it and Spectrier were never shown directly to the public before release.
  • Bulbapedia says that, with Calyrex riding it, its endurance rises until it can run for up to seven days and nights.
