Spinda

Spinda is a Normal-type Pokémon, the Spot Panda Pokémon, number 327 (#0327) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the Hoenn region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 5 kg.
Spinda is the Spot Panda Pokémon, and the Pokédex claims the odds of two sharing a spot pattern are under one in four billion. It staggers about in a wobbling walk that it believes is a straight line.

Lore
Biology
Spinda is 1.1 m tall and weighs 5 kg. It is a small cream panda-like Pokémon with red arms, a red stripe along the bottom of its belly, rabbit-like features and black spirals for eyes and on its ears. Four of its spots can sit anywhere on its face and ears, and a fifth sits on the back of its head, and the pattern is different on every Spinda.
Behaviour
Spinda's walk is a wobbling stumble. The Ultra Sun entry says a long walk makes it feel ill, and Ruby says its lurching steps look like dancing. The unsteady movement confuses opponents and spoils their aim, and the Moon entry says some collectors enjoy the tiny differences in spot patterns.
Habitat
The Pokédex places it in mountains, and in the Hoenn games it is found on Route 113. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Own Tempo prevents confusion and Tangled Feet doubles its evasion while it is confused; the hidden Ability is Contrary, which inverts stat changes. It uses Teeter Dance, Dizzy Punch, Sucker Punch, Uproar and Double-Edge. Every base stat is exactly 60, so it has no standout strength.
Name origin
Spinda may combine 'spin' and 'panda'. The Japanese name is Patcheel (パッチール), possibly 'patch' plus 'reel', as in losing one's balance.
Design inspiration
Spinda seems modelled on a Qinling panda with some rabbit traits, and also resembles a teddy bear. Its dazed eyes may copy the cartoon look of dizziness, and its staggering steps resemble drunken boxing, a martial art that imitates a drunk person's movements. These are fan readings.
In the games
Explorers of Sky has a Spinda running Spinda's Café, and in Red and Blue Rescue Team one hands the player the Clear Wing from its long search for the Mirage Pokémon. Spinda debuted in Ruby and Sapphire.
In the anime
Spinda debuted in 'Going for a Spinda', where Ash and his friends help Claire track down a Spinda with a heart-shaped forehead spot that belongs to her fiancé Kain, while Brock keeps picking up one with a broken-heart spot.
Fun facts
- Bulbapedia says Spinda's base stat total of 360 might nod to the 360 degrees in a circle, since Spinda spins.
- Its spots come from a 32-bit number, giving 4,294,967,296 possible values, but a fan tool cited by Bulbapedia counts 3,945,136,128 distinct patterns, and Bulbapedia says even that figure is slightly too high.
- Bulbapedia says a bug in how Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl read the number behind Spinda's spots means Spinda cannot be transferred out of those games.
