Lore

Biology

Staraptor is 1.2 m tall and weighs 24.9 kg. It is grey-brown with a white chest, a black ruff around the shoulders and a black crest with a red tip. The Pokédex says it fusses over the shape of that crest, and Bulbapedia adds that it uses it to look bigger. Its wing and leg muscles are strong enough to keep it airborne with a small Pokémon in its grip.

Behaviour

When a Staravia evolves it leaves its flock to live alone, strong enough to look after itself. The Pokédex describes Staraptor as savage: it never stops attacking even when injured, and it courageously takes on foes much larger than itself.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in South Province Area Three and around Casseroya Lake, and in The Teal Mask in Fellhorn Gorge, Oni Mountain and the Kitakami Wilds.

Powers

Staraptor has Intimidate, with Reckless hidden, which strengthens recoil moves such as Brave Bird, the 120-power dive it learns at level 49. It gains Close Combat when it evolves. Mega Staraptor, introduced in the Mega Dimension DLC, becomes a Fighting and Flying type with the Ability Contrary, which reverses stat changes; it stands 1.9 m tall and weighs 50 kg, with light grey plumage, gold crescent markings and a cape of tail feathers. Legends: Z-A says it can soar while gripping a Steelix of more than 400 kg (880 lb). Base Attack rises from 120 to 140 and Speed from 100 to 110.

Name origin

Staraptor combines 'starling' and 'raptor', a bird of prey. The Japanese name is Mukuhawk (ムクホーク), from mukudori (grey starling) and 'hawk'.

Design inspiration

Staraptor blends a white-cheeked starling with a bird of prey; Bulbapedia says much of its inspiration seems to come from hawks and falcons, with similarities to the harpy eagle. Mega Staraptor's size and strength could reference the roc, a legendary giant bird. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Staraptor evolves from Staravia at level 34 and is the last stage of the line.

In the games

Mega Staraptor, which needs the Staraptite, is new in the Mega Dimension DLC of Legends: Z-A, where Staraptor lives in Hyperspace Lumiose. The species debuted in Diamond and Pearl, and in Scarlet and Violet it appears in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles.

In the anime

Staraptor debuted in 'Following A Maiden's Voyage!', where Piplup's stray Bubble Beam hit it, and the Whirlwind it used in return wrecked Professor Rowan's lab. Ash's Staravia evolved into Staraptor in 'Pursuing a Lofty Goal!' during the final round of the Squallville PokéRinger competition.
