Staravia official artwork

Staravia is a Normal/Flying-type Pokémon, the Starling Pokémon, number 397 (#0397) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the Sinnoh region. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 15.5 kg.

Staravia is the quarrelsome middle stage of the starling line: its enormous flocks pick fights with each other, and a Legends: Arceus Pokédex entry suspects that the Staravia with the grandest head plumes are the strongest. Alone, it cries noisily.

How to pronounce Staravia

Staravia is pronounced star-AY-vee-uh. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Staravia is 0.6 m tall and weighs 15.5 kg. Its head and upper body are mostly black, with a white chest marked by an M-shaped pattern and a spiky white mask around the face. A long tuft of feathers on the back of its head curves forward, and the spot on its forehead is smaller on the female. Its beak is orange with a black tip.

Behaviour

Staravia knows it is weak on its own, so it always lives in a flock and cries noisily when separated from it. The Pokédex says flocks that meet squabble over territory, and the fights between them are fierce. One Legends: Arceus entry describes them as constantly fighting among themselves.

Habitat

The Pokédex says Staravia lives in forests and fields. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the South and West Provinces, and in The Teal Mask in parts of Kitakami.

Diet

The Pokédex says it flies around forests and fields hunting bug Pokémon.

Powers

Staravia has Intimidate, which lowers opposing Pokémon's Attack when it enters battle, and the hidden Reckless, which strengthens recoil moves. It fights with Wing Attack and Aerial Ace, and Whirlwind blows foes away. With base Attack 75 and Speed 80 it is quicker and tougher than Starly, though still a stepping stone.

Name origin

Staravia combines 'starling' and 'avian'. The Japanese name is Mukubird (ムクバード), from mukudori (grey starling) and 'bird'.

Design inspiration

Staravia looks like an adult starling, though Bulbapedia says its features resemble an adult northern lapwing more closely.

Evolution notes

Staravia evolves from Starly at level 14 and into Staraptor at level 34.

In the games

In Diamond and Pearl, where it debuted, Staravia can be caught on routes such as 209 and 212. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 3-star Tera Raid Battles, and in Legends: Z-A it comes by trade in the base game and lives in Hyperspace Lumiose in the Mega Dimension DLC.

In the anime

Ash's Starly evolved into Staravia in 'A Staravia Is Born!'. A Staravia also debuted at Professor Rowan's lab in 'Following A Maiden's Voyage!', escaping during a scuffle between Piplup and Chimchar before returning.
