Lore

Biology

Swalot is a violet, shapeless Pokémon, 1.7 m tall and 80 kg, with red beady eyes, yellow whiskers, three-fingered hands and a row of black diamonds across its middle. Bulbapedia says it can swell and shrink its body at will. The Pokédex says it has no teeth and a cavernous mouth, and that it sweats toxic fluid from the pores or follicles on its body.

Behaviour

When Swalot spots prey, the Pokédex says it sprays the target with its toxic fluid, waits for it to weaken and then gulps it down whole. Bulbapedia, quoting the Sleep Style Dex, says it sometimes dozes with its mouth gaping and may be dreaming of a giant meal it is trying to swallow.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list puts it in grassland. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild only in Violet, at Casseroya Lake, and Scarlet players have to trade for it. In Legends: Z-A it appears in the wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

Diet

Swalot has no teeth, so it swallows whatever it eats whole.

Powers

Its Abilities are Liquid Ooze and Sticky Hold, with Gluttony hidden. It poisons with Toxic and Gunk Shot, and can switch to Knock Off, Body Slam or Earthquake. With 100 base HP and 83 Defense and Special Defense it is a sturdy, slow Poison type.

Name origin

Swalot may combine 'swallow' and 'a lot'. The Japanese name is Marunoom (マルノーム), which may come from marunomi, 'swallowing whole'.

Design inspiration

Swalot may be modelled on a stomach, a gallbladder or a giant poison gland, or on a rubbish bag. It may also draw on the Nuppeppo, a Japanese yokai shaped like a blob with tiny limbs, as well as slime moulds and amoebae. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Swalot is the final form of Gulpin, reached at level 26.

In the games

In Scarlet and Violet, Swalot appears as a 4-star Tera Raid Pokémon in Violet. It first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire.

In the anime

Swalot debuted in 'Deceit and Assist' as Anthony's Pokémon, losing to May at the Hoenn Grand Festival. In 'From Brags to Riches', Dominick sent out a Swalot alongside a Tropius for a Double Battle at the Ever Grande Conference, but Ash's Corphish beat the Swalot.
