Lore
Biology
Gulpin is a round, green, shapeless Pokémon, 0.4 m tall and 10.3 kg. It has a black diamond on its back, a yellow feather-like tuft on its head and puckered lips on a face with slanted, usually closed eyes. The Pokédex says it has a very small heart and brain next to its giant stomach, and that vile gases escape while it digests.
Behaviour
Even asleep Gulpin is busy with its stomach. Bulbapedia, quoting the Sleep Style Dex, says it moves its mouth in its sleep: a closed mouth means it is digesting, and a wide open one means its stomach is empty.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat list puts it in grassland. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild in Violet only, in East Province (Area One) and South Province (Area Three); Scarlet players have to trade for it. In Legends: Z-A it is wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
Diet
Canon names no menu, but the Emerald Pokédex says even scrap iron is no problem for its stomach fluid.
Powers
Its Abilities are Liquid Ooze, which damages opponents using draining moves, and Sticky Hold, with Gluttony hidden. Stockpile, Spit Up and Swallow all arrive at the same level, 28 in Scarlet and Violet. With 70 base HP it is bulky but weak at attacking.
Name origin
Gulpin may come from 'gulp in', 'gulping' and 'sculpin', and may also hint at 'toxin'. The Japanese name is Gokulin (ゴクリン), which may come from gokuri, 'in one gulp'.
Design inspiration
Gulpin may be based on a stomach, a gallbladder or a poison gland, with a possible nod to a rubbish bag. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Gulpin evolves into Swalot at level 26, with no other conditions.
In the games
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, a Gulpin is the owner of the Link Shop in Pokémon Square. Gulpin first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire.
In the anime
Gulpin debuted in 'Gulpin it Down', where a swarm ate all the food in a harbour city and one Gulpin was left enormous by a failed fix. In 'Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel', a Gulpin that linked hugging with being abandoned helped Clemont free Ash and Volcanion.
