Lore
Biology
Swirlix is small and round, 0.4 m tall and 3.5 kg, covered in fluffy white fur with a tuft between its ears and a light pink tail. Its tongue often lolls out at one side of its mouth, and a pair of three-toed pink paws is tucked up in its fur. The Pokédex says it spits out sticky white threads to tangle its enemies.
Behaviour
Swirlix is ruled by its sweet tooth, and the Pokédex says it becomes incredibly grumpy if it does not get enough sugar. It is usually shown floating along rather than walking.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no natural habitat. In Sword it lives in Glimwood Tangle and the Wild Area, and in Legends: Z-A it is found around Lumiose City, with more in the Mega Dimension DLC. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet.
Diet
The Pokédex says it eats only sweets, as much sugar every day as its own body weighs.
Powers
Its Abilities are Sweet Veil, which stops friendly Pokémon falling asleep, and the hidden Unburden, which doubles its Speed once a held item is used up. It learns Draining Kiss, Play Rough and Energy Ball, and can wrap itself in Cotton Guard. Its best base stat is a modest 66 Defense, so it is a gentle Fairy that mostly waits to evolve.
Name origin
Swirlix may combine swirl and licks, and could also involve helix. The Japanese name is Peroppafu (ペロッパフ), which may blend peropero, a licking sound, or perro, Spanish for dog, with puff.
Design inspiration
Swirlix seems to be modelled on cotton candy, called fairy floss in some countries, which may even explain its type. Its sticky threads may nod to European folktales where tasting fairy food keeps a mortal stuck in the fairy world, and its tongue, nose and round ears suggest a lap dog. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Swirlix evolves into Slurpuff when it is traded while holding a Whipped Dream.
In the games
Swirlix is a version exclusive, wild only in X (on Route 7) and in Sword, while Y players can find it in the Fairy-type Friend Safari. In Super Mystery Dungeon it is the Expedition Society's stewardess, a glutton who scoffs a lot of what she cooks.
In the anime
Five Swirlix attacked Serena and her Fennekin in 'A Battle by Any Other Name!' after wrongly blaming them for stealing their Berries; Team Rocket were the real thieves.
