Thwackey official artwork

Thwackey is a Grass-type Pokémon, the Beat Pokémon, number 811 (#0811) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Galar region. It is 0.7 m tall and weighs 14 kg.

Thwackey is the Beat Pokémon, a Grass-type drummer so lost in its rhythm that, the Pokédex says, it won't notice it has already knocked out its opponent. It uses two sticks, and the faster the beat, the more respect it earns among its peers.

Lore

Biology

Thwackey is a bipedal, humanoid monkey, 0.7 m tall and 14 kg, with a light green body, lighter green face and chest markings, dark brown ears, arms and tail, and dark green wristbands. The single stick Grookey carried splits into two when Thwackey evolves, and the pair holds up a tuft of leaves on its head; take the sticks out and the leaves fall into a mohawk.

Behaviour

Thwackey is rhythm-obsessed. The Pokédex says it becomes so focused on drumming that it sometimes ignores its Trainer's commands. Bulbapedia says it feels a beat constantly and sways as it walks. In the anime it grooms friends to cheer them up, which is its way of showing friendship and trust.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it needs a trade in the base game, or can be evolved from Grookey in The Indigo Disk.

Powers

Thwackey has Overgrow, with Grassy Surge as its hidden Ability. It hits with Double Hit as it evolves, then Razor Leaf, Knock Off, Uproar and Wood Hammer, and Taunt can goad opponents. With 85 Attack and 80 Speed it is a solid mid-stage attacker.

Name origin

Thwackey may combine 'thwack' and 'monkey'. The Japanese name is Bachinkey (バチンキー), which may blend バチン bachin ('whack') and 'monkey', and could also come from 'capuchin monkey'.

Design inspiration

Thwackey appears to be based on macaques, capuchins and pygmy marmosets, plus common pictures of cavemen. Its drumming may recall macaques showing dominance and the ritual songs many cultures use before battle, and its sticks resemble drumsticks, hair sticks and clubs. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Thwackey evolves from Grookey at level 16 and into Rillaboom at level 35.

In the games

Thwackey is the middle stage of the Galar Grass starter line, first appearing in Sword and Shield as Grookey's evolution. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Several Thwackey debuted in 'A One-Stick Wonder!'. Ash and Goh help one that has just a single stick and drums worse than the rest.
