Lore

Biology

Tinkatuff is a pink humanoid, 0.7 m tall and 59.1 kg, with a large head and arms, silver eyes, steel plates on its hips like turned-out pockets and a white growth on its head tied up like a ponytail. Its crude, sturdy hammer has loose metal plates for a head, and what looks like its old Tinkatink hammer sits on top of the shaft.

Behaviour

Its Legends: Z-A Pokédex entry says Tinkatuff sometimes wander into human settlements to search factories and warehouses for metal. In the anime, forging a new hammer is what triggers its next evolution.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in scrap metal piles, while Bulbapedia says it mostly lives in ruins across Paldea. In Scarlet and Violet it is found across Paldea, including Dalizapa Passage and Casseroya Lake, and it appears in 3-star Tera Raids.

Powers

Mold Breaker, Own Tempo and the hidden Pickpocket, which steals the held item of anything that hits it on contact, suit a metal thief. It swings its hammer with Brutal Swing and Slam, and uses Flash Cannon, Play Rough and Knock Off. With 82 base Special Defense and 78 Speed it is a sturdy mid-stage.

Name origin

Tinkatuff may combine 'tinker' with 'tough'. The Japanese name is Nakanuchan (ナカヌチャン), perhaps naka ('middle'), kanuchi (blacksmith) and the friendly suffix -chan, marking the middle stage.

Design inspiration

Megumi Mizutani designed the Tinkatink line, according to Bulbapedia, which cites her social media post. Its type pair and size may draw on dwarfs, who are commonly shown forging iron tools and weapons. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Tinkatuff evolves from Tinkatink at level 24 and into Tinkaton at level 38.

In the games

Tinkatuff is the middle stage of the Tinkaton line, introduced in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it appears in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose, with Hyperspace dex number 17, and Bulbapedia says the base game can obtain it only by trade.

In the anime

Dot's Tinkatink evolved into Tinkatuff during a battle against a Terastallized Bombirdier in 'Tinkatink's Hammer Wasn't Made in a Day'. It went on to evolve into Tinkaton in 'Tinkatuff's Hammer Wasn't Made in a Year!'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Pokémon Sleep shows its hammer serving as both a weapon and a pillow when it sleeps.
