Lore

Biology

Togepi is a small, round, light-yellow Pokémon that stays inside an egg-like shell after hatching. The white shell is dotted with red and blue shapes, and five round-tipped spikes form a crown on its head. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 1.5 kg. Bulbapedia says it can pull back into its shell to sleep, and that it absorbs other people's positive feelings and stores that happiness in the shell to share.

Behaviour

Togepi has a joyful, guileless nature, and the Pokédex says it shares good luck when treated kindly. The Legends: Arceus entry says it is often mistaken for a moving egg in fields and mountains, and that its smile soothes the soul.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is forest, though Bulbapedia calls it rare in the wild. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A, but it can be found in the wild in Legends: Arceus and Sword and Shield.

Powers

Its Abilities are Hustle and Serene Grace, with Super Luck hidden. Serene Grace makes the extra effects of its moves more likely, which pairs with Metronome, Follow Me, Wish and Baton Pass in a support role. With only 35 HP and 20 Attack it is more helper than fighter.

Name origin

Togepi may come from toge ('spike') and piyopiyo, the sound of a chirping bird. The Japanese name is Togepy (トゲピー).

Design inspiration

Togepi appears to be based on a baby hatchling of some kind of animal, or on an egg, with its evolutions looking more like birds. Bulbapedia also suggests the dokkaebi, a Korean goblin that can bring good or bad luck, which might explain its luck-based hidden Ability. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Togepi evolves into Togetic when levelled up with high friendship, and Togetic evolves into Togekiss with a Shiny Stone.

In the games

In Gold, Silver and Crystal, Professor Elm's assistant gives you a Togepi Egg at the Pokémon Center in Violet City, which was its debut.

In the anime

Misty's Togepi is the best known: Ash discovered its Egg in the final scene of 'Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon', and it hatched in 'Who Gets to Keep Togepi?', imprinting on Misty. In 'Where No Togepi Has Gone Before!', a spoilt Togepi uses its cuteness to cause trouble.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Togepi beat every other Generation II Pokémon into a video game: it showed up in Hey You, Pikachu! (Japan, 12 December 1998), almost a year before Gold and Silver.
  • Because its real category was not yet known, Togepi's Pokédex entries in the first season of the anime call it the 'Egg Pokemon'.
  • Of the Generation II baby Pokémon, Togepi alone has no link to a Generation I Pokémon, Bulbapedia notes.
