Lore
Biology
Treecko is a small green gecko, 0.5 m tall and 5 kg, with slit-pupilled yellow eyes, a red throat and belly, three-toed hands and feet, and a thick dark green tail. Tiny hooks under its feet let it scale vertical walls and even hang upside down from ceilings. Its tail senses humidity, which it uses to forecast the next day's weather.
Behaviour
Treecko never panics. If a bigger foe glares at it, the Pokédex says, it glares right back without giving up an inch of ground. It nests in a giant tree and guards its territory ferociously, so the Emerald Pokédex names it the forest's tree guardian. Its favourite attack is a tail slam.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists forests, and Bulbapedia says Treecko is rarely seen in the wild. In Scarlet and Violet it can be found in the Canyon Biome added by The Indigo Disk.
Powers
Its Ability is Overgrow, which boosts Grass moves by half when its HP runs low; the hidden Ability Unburden doubles its Speed once it uses up or loses a held item. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Giga Drain at level 21 and Leaf Storm at level 39. With base Speed 70 and Special Attack 65 it is quick but frail.
Name origin
Treecko joins 'tree' and 'gecko'. The Japanese name is Kimori (キモリ), which Bulbapedia says may play on 守宮 yamori ('gecko') alongside 木 ki ('tree'), 森 mori ('forest') and 守り mori ('keeper').
Design inspiration
Treecko appears to be based on a gecko, specifically the leaf-tailed gecko, which hides among plant-like growths and climbs sheer surfaces. Its green body and red underside may nod to the male green anole, whose throat flap turns red to show dominance. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Treecko evolves into Grovyle at level 16, and Grovyle into Sceptile at level 36.
In the games
Treecko is the Grass option among the three Hoenn partner Pokémon Professor Birch offers at the start of Ruby and Sapphire, and it returns in Emerald and in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. In Legends: Z-A it is available only in the Mega Dimension DLC, in the Grass-type wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Ash caught his Treecko in 'Tree's a Crowd', where a band of Treecko were looking after an old tree that seemed to be dying. Sawyer also owned one.
