Lore

Biology

Ursaluna is a huge, dark brown, four-legged bear, 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in) tall and 290 kg (639.3 lb), with a grey pelt over its humped back, rectangular spikes on its back and head, and a pale circle on its forehead like a full moon behind two cloud-like eyebrows. The Legends: Arceus Pokédex suggests Hisui's swampy terrain gave it its burly build and the ability to manipulate peat at will.

Behaviour

Bulbapedia says Ursaluna is good at finding items and missing people by scent. Bloodmoon Ursaluna is highly alert and rarely shows itself, but tends to appear on foggy nights. The Pokédex says its left eye lets it see in darkness and that it wears mud as hard as iron.

Habitat

In Legends: Arceus it appears in massive mass outbreaks in the Crimson Mirelands. In Scarlet and Violet, regular Ursaluna come from Pokémon HOME or trades, while a single Bloodmoon Ursaluna waits in Kitakami's Timeless Woods. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Abilities are Guts and Bulletproof, with Unnerve hidden, and it learns Headlong Rush on evolving. With 130 base HP, 140 base Attack and 105 base Defense it is a heavy bruiser, and its base stat total of 550 is the highest of any Normal type introduced in Generation VIII. Bloodmoon Ursaluna is a special attacker with 135 base Special Attack and the Ability Mind's Eye, and it is the only known Pokémon that learns Blood Moon.

Name origin

Ursaluna may combine 'ursa' and 'luna', Latin for 'bear' and 'moon'. The Japanese name is Gachiguma (ガチグマ), which may blend gachirin ('round moon') and kuma ('bear').

Design inspiration

The Ussuri brown bear of Hokkaido, which Hisui resembles, may have inspired Ursaluna, and its mountain-like shape perhaps nods to the Ainu bear god Kim-un-kamuy. Bulbapedia says Bloodmoon Ursaluna may be based on the lunar eclipse, or blood moon, and on onikuma, Japanese bears that live so long that they become yōkai. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Ursaring evolves into Ursaluna when exposed to a Peat Block under a full moon. Bloodmoon Ursaluna cannot be obtained by evolving.

In the games

In Legends: Arceus, where it debuted, Ursaluna is a Ride Pokémon you meet in the Crimson Mirelands. In The Teal Mask, Bloodmoon Ursaluna is a one-of-a-kind boss, and its Pokédex entry says it drifted across the sea to Kitakami and gained special powers there.

In the anime

Bloodmoon Ursaluna debuted in 'Hamber's Moonlight Battle', where Hamber had just caught it in Kitakami.

Fun facts

  • Bloodmoon Ursaluna can only be male, and Bulbapedia says nothing can change its form.
  • Since version 3.0.0 of Scarlet and Violet, Bulbapedia says, Bloodmoon Ursaluna is the only Pokémon the game is hardcoded never to show as Shiny in the Pokédex.
  • A glitch in Legends: Arceus swaps Ursaluna's happy and curious sounds for those of Basculegion.
