Lore
Biology
Ursaring is a broad, brown-furred bear, 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) tall and 125.8 kg (277.3 lb), with a yellow muzzle and paw pads and a large ring mark on its chest. The long, rectangular fur on its shoulders is longer on females. It walks upright but can drop to all fours, and has five claws on each long forelimb.
Behaviour
Ursaring gathers food every day and sleeps in treetops. It climbs well, yet the Pokédex says it often knocks trees down with its front legs, then eats whatever Berries fall. Bulbapedia notes it fights Primeape when they meet while foraging, and that in the anime it fiercely protects its cubs.
Habitat
It lives in mountainous forests, according to Bulbapedia. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the North Province, Dalizapa Passage and West Province Area Three, and in 4-star Tera Raids. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
Diet
Berries and fruit, with honey as its favourite food, according to Bulbapedia.
Powers
Its Abilities are Guts and Quick Feet, with Unnerve hidden. It learns Play Rough, Thrash and Hammer Arm. With 130 base Attack it is a strong physical bruiser, but its Speed of 55 is slow.
Name origin
Ursaring may combine 'ursa', Latin for bear, with 'ring'. The Japanese name is Ringuma (リングマ), which may blend 'ring', rin ('wheel' or 'ring') and kuma ('bear').
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia reads Ursaring as a bear, perhaps a brown bear or an Asian black bear, and suggests the Ursa Major constellation. It also says the rectangular fur on its shoulders resembles buckskin fringes or epaulettes. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Ursaring evolves from Teddiursa at level 30. It becomes Ursaluna when a Peat Block is used on it under a full moon, a method that only works in Legends: Arceus.
In the games
In Legends: Arceus the Pokédex calls Ursaring a ferocious danger when the cold season sets in and it hunts for berries, and the species first appeared in Gold and Silver.
In the anime
Ursaring debuted in the episode 'Forest Grumps', where a crowd of them chased Ash and his friends through their territory during mating season. Paul caught his Ursaring in 'Different Strokes for Different Blokes'.
Fun facts
- Bulbapedia says Ursaring's evolution into Ursaluna is programmed into Scarlet and Violet, but it uses a placeholder method that nothing in the game can trigger.
- Ursaring is one of only five Pokémon, with Rattata, Raticate, Natu and Scizor, whose English category was changed for a reason beyond formatting.
- Its number of claws has wobbled: Gold and Silver art shows four, the Generation II sprites three, and Ruby and Sapphire to Platinum four again, before HeartGold and SoulSilver settled on five.
