Lore

Biology

Urshifu is a tall, muscular bear with grey, black and white fur, a yellow muzzle and a flowing fur headband. It is 1.9 m tall and weighs 105 kg. The two styles share one body and differ only in the set of the head fur and the way they hold their fists and stance, but their types differ: Single Strike is Fighting and Dark, Rapid Strike is Fighting and Water.

Behaviour

Its style and personality are fixed by how it trained as a Kubfu and which scroll it read. Single Strike Style believes in the one-hit knockout and crushes foes without mercy; Rapid Strike Style watches calmly, dodges, and attacks like a river, flowing but unstoppable. Wild Urshifu train by racing up sheer cliffs.

Habitat

The Pokédex says wild Urshifu live in the mountains of a distant region, far from Galar. In Galar they exist only by training a Kubfu on The Isle of Armor.

Diet

It loves honey, especially the Max Honey of Honeycalm Island. In Sword and Shield it refuses the Max Soup that unlocks its Gigantamax power unless a comb of Max Honey is stirred in.

Powers

Its Ability Unseen Fist lets contact moves punch straight through Protect and Detect. Single Strike Style has Wicked Blow, which always lands a critical hit; Rapid Strike Style has Surging Strikes, which hits 3 times and crits every time. Their Gigantamax forms use G-Max One Blow and G-Max Rapid Flow. With 130 base Attack it is a fierce physical attacker.

Name origin

Urshifu may combine 'ursus', Latin for 'bear', with 'shifu', Chinese for 'master', and a hint of 'kung fu'. The Japanese name Wulaosu (ウーラオス) may blend 'wushu' with laoshi ('teacher') and the martial-arts shout 'osu'.

Design inspiration

Yusuke Ohmura designed Urshifu and Kubfu. It appears to be an Asian black bear crossed with a wushu fighter. Single Strike Style may reference bajiquan, a style of direct, explosive strikes, and Rapid Strike Style taijiquan, a style of flowing movement. The Gigantamax forms may draw on fierce Buddhist guardian deities.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Kubfu in The Isle of Armor: reading the Scroll of Darkness makes Single Strike Style, the Scroll of Waters makes Rapid Strike Style. The choice is permanent.

In the games

Urshifu comes from the Kubfu that dojo master Mustard gives the player in The Isle of Armor, the Sword and Shield expansion that introduced it, and that the player sends up either of the Towers of Two Fists. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives from Pokémon HOME or by evolving Kubfu in The Indigo Disk. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Single Strike Style Urshifu debuted in 'Leaping Toward the Dream!', owned by Quillon, and Rapid Strike Style in 'Trial on a Golden Scale!', owned by Danika.
