Lore
Biology
Vespiquen has a striped yellow-and-black abdomen that flares out like a ballgown, an orange face with red eyes, and a big red gem on its forehead. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 38.5 kg. In Pokémon Horizons, one also raises a Ribombee in its abdomen.
Behaviour
Vespiquen commands the hive with pheromones, and the Pokédex says each colony has just one. Its Combee will risk their lives to defend it. The Legends: Arceus entry says it deals with intruders by eating them, but Bulbapedia adds that outsiders who help defend the hive may be rewarded.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it lives across Paldea's North, South and West Provinces and the East Paldean Sea, and appears in 4 star Tera Raid Battles.
Diet
Bulbapedia says it eats flowers and turns them into honey for its grubs, and one entry says it raises them on honey that Combee collect.
Powers
Its Abilities are Pressure and, hidden, Unnerve. It is the only known Pokémon that can learn Attack Order and Defend Order, both arriving at level 40 in Scarlet and Violet. With base Defense and Special Defense of 102 and Speed 40, it is tough and slow, and it can lay Spikes and Toxic Spikes by TM.
Name origin
Vespiquen may combine Latin vespa ('wasp') and 'queen'. The Japanese name is Beequen (ビークイン), from 'bee' and 'queen'.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia sees a mix of queen bee and queen wasp. The red gem may mark royal status, and with the horns it resembles the headdresses of European noblewomen of the Late Middle Ages, for example the escoffion.
Evolution notes
Vespiquen evolves from a female Combee at level 21, with no other condition.
In the games
Vespiquen was introduced in Diamond and Pearl. In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon it is the queen of Nectar Meadow, and in Pokopia it swaps furniture for three jars of Honey. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Vespiquen first appeared in 'An Angry Combeenation!', ruling a vast swarm of Combee. In 'A Trainer and Child Reunion!', Aaron used one alongside a Drapion in his power demonstration.
