Vibrava official artwork

Vibrava is a Ground/Dragon-type Pokémon, the Vibration Pokémon, number 329 (#0329) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the Hoenn region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 15.3 kg.

Vibrava is the Vibration Pokémon, a dragonfly-like desert dweller whose wings have not finished growing. Instead of flying far, it rubs them together to make ultrasonic waves that give people headaches and knock out its prey.

Lore

Biology

Vibrava is 1.1 m tall and weighs 15.3 kg. It has a skinny yellow body, a small head topped by two yellow antennae, bulging green eyes and two large white teeth showing at each side of its mouth, and four rhombus-shaped green wings with black edges. The same rhombus shape repeats at the end of its tail.

Behaviour

Vibrava makes prey faint with sound, and the Pokédex says it then dissolves its catch in digestive juices, a daily meal that helps its wings grow. One entry says Trainers who stay near one need earplugs.

Habitat

The Pokédex places it in rough terrain, and Bulbapedia says it calls the desert home. In Scarlet and Violet's base games it can only be traded for or transferred from Pokémon HOME, but The Indigo Disk adds Blueberry Academy's Savanna Biome and 4-star Tera Raids. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Levitate is its only Ability, so it avoids Ground moves despite its Ground type. It gets Dragon Breath on evolving and later learns Screech, Bug Buzz, Earthquake and, at level 62, Boomburst. With balanced base Attack and Speed of 70 it is a midway step on the road to Flygon.

Name origin

Vibrava may combine 'vibrate' and 'larva'. The Japanese name is ビブラーバ (Vibrava), the same as the English.

Design inspiration

Vibrava appears to be an adult antlion, though it looks more like a mayfly, which may nod to the Japanese word for the adult antlion, usuba-kagerō ('thin-winged mayfly'). Its Dragon typing might reflect 'sand dragon' dragonflies, and the harsh noise of its wings recalls a cicada. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Vibrava evolves from Trapinch at level 35 and into Flygon at level 45.

In the games

In Pokémon Colosseum, Vibrava is a Shadow Pokémon you can snag, and Bulbapedia says it is the only Dragon-type one that can be snagged there. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire.

In the anime

In 'Beg, Burrow and Steal', dozens of Trapinch evolve into Vibrava at an underground lake while Team Rocket tries to steal them. In 'Spontaneous Combusken', Brianna uses a Vibrava in the Battle Stage of the Chrysanthemum Island Contest.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Vibrava is the only Pokémon that gains the Dragon type on evolving and can still evolve again.
  • It is the only Ground type that has more than one pair of wings, according to Bulbapedia.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, the Aqua Admins Shelly and Matt each own a Vibrava that they use for air travel.
  • Pokémon Sleep gives Vibrava four sleep styles, including 'Hovering Sleep' and 'Wing-Vibrating Sleep'.
