Vigoroth is the Wild Monkey Pokémon, the hyperactive middle stage of a famously lazy family. The Pokédex says its heart works at a tenfold tempo, leaving it unable to stay still for even a moment, and being kept still stresses it out.

Lore

Biology

Vigoroth is a white, bipedal, sloth-like Pokémon, 1.4 m tall and 46.5 kg, with a red tuft of fur shaped like a teardrop on its forehead, brown rings round its eyes and long arms ending in two black claws. Round red pads sit under its hands and feet, and it has a baboon-like red patch on its rear.

Behaviour

Vigoroth is always itching to rampage. The Pokédex says it gets more and more stressed when it cannot move around, and enough stress even makes it ill. It spends the day running over fields and mountains to settle itself, or it cannot sleep at night.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it runs wild through the jungle. In Scarlet and Violet it is found across Paldea, from the South Province to North Province and Dalizapa Passage.

Powers

Its Ability Vital Spirit stops it falling asleep, which suits a Pokémon that cannot rest; unlike Slakoth and Slaking it never has Truant. It uses Slash, Fury Swipes, Focus Punch and Reversal. With 80 base HP, Attack and Defense and Speed 90 it is a well-rounded, fast bruiser.

Name origin

Vigoroth may combine 'vigor' or 'vigorous' with 'sloth'. The Japanese name is Yarukimono (ヤルキモノ), which may combine yaruki (motivation) with namakemono (sloth).

Design inspiration

Vigoroth looks like a sloth, but Bulbapedia also sees a baboon in its bright red rump, short tail and violent outbursts, and a hyperactive human youth in its energy. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Vigoroth evolves from Slakoth at level 18 and into Slaking at level 36.

In the games

In Emerald, Bulbapedia says, Vigoroth are the Pokémon movers at the start of the game. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet, and is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Norman's Vigoroth debuted in 'There's no Place Like Hoenn', beating Ash's Pikachu in an unofficial battle. In the Gym battle in 'Balance of Power', it beat Torkoal easily but its fight with Pikachu ended without a winner.

Fun facts

  • In the Pokémon Generations episode 'The Adventure', a wild Vigoroth picks a fight with Red's Pikachu near the Weather Institute.
  • In the film 'Zoroark: Master of Illusions', several Vigoroth chase Zorua until Infernape and Mamoswine drive them away.
  • Its first manga appearance, in the Pokémon Adventures chapter 'Nixing Nuzleaf', is as one of Norman's most valued fighters.
