Lore

Biology

Slakoth is a brown, four-legged Pokémon with coarse, shaggy fur, two dark stripes on its back and a large pink pig-like snout. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 24 kg. Its arms are long and lanky and each paw has two sharp claws.

Behaviour

Slakoth is content to loaf around motionless, and the Pokédex says it is rare to see one moving. It keeps the same nest its whole life, though it can cover long distances by swimming along rivers.

Habitat

Bulbapedia lists it with forest Pokémon. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in trees in Paldea's South Province, and The Indigo Disk adds the Terarium's Coastal Biome and Torchlit Labyrinth.

Diet

The Pokédex says its one daily meal is just three leaves.

Powers

Its only Ability is Truant, which makes it skip every second turn. It uses Yawn to put foes to sleep and Slack Off to heal itself, and learns Play Rough at level 38. With base Speed 30 it is slow, a first stage.

Name origin

Slakoth may combine 'slack off' and 'sloth'. The Japanese name is Namakero (ナマケロ), which may combine namakeru (to laze around) with namakemono (sloth).

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia, citing a 2003 Nintendo Dream interview, says Ken Sugimori thought up Slakoth's name before its design, and that it is based on sloths. It reads the pink nose and two-clawed paws as a two-toed sloth, a fan reading.

Evolution notes

Slakoth becomes Vigoroth at level 18, and Vigoroth becomes Slaking at level 36.

In the games

Slakoth and Slowpoke make up Team Slacker, an exploration team with no ambition, in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness. Slakoth debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, appears in 2-star Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet, and is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

In 'The Garden of Eatin'', Slakoth live in a banana garden until a Snorlax starts eating the bananas, and one evolves into Vigoroth to beat it. In 'The Good, The Bad, and The Lucky!', Jessie gets a Slakoth out of the Rocket Prize Master, and it does nothing to help.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says that before Generation IV no Pokémon besides Slakoth and Slaking were known to learn Slack Off.
  • Bulbapedia says it is set to appear in South Province (Area Three) in Scarlet and Violet but never does, because the area has no suitable trees.
  • Bulbapedia says Pokémon Sleep's Sleep Style Dex notes that only Drowsy Power can get Slakoth moving, so it can sleep next to Snorlax.
