Lore
Biology
Breloom is a bipedal, mushroom-like Grass and Fighting type, 1.2 m tall and 39.2 kg, which Bulbapedia says also has kangaroo-like and dinosaur-like features. It wears a green mushroom cap and has a tail ending in seed clusters. The Pokédex says the seeds are hardened toxic spores, horrible to eat.
Behaviour
Breloom closes in with light, sprightly footwork, scatters spores from the holes in its cap to hamper its foe, then lands quick punches that are almost invisible.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it loves warm and humid climates. In Scarlet and Violet a Breloom waits in Paldea's West Province.
Diet
The Pokédex says it eats trees and plants growing in fields and forests.
Powers
Its Abilities are Effect Spore and Poison Heal, with Technician hidden, which boosts moves of 60 base power or less, such as the Mach Punch it learns on evolving. It also uses Force Palm, Brick Break, Dynamic Punch and Focus Punch. Its base Attack of 130 tops every other Grass or Fighting type introduced in Generation III.
Name origin
Breloom may combine 'umbrella' and 'mushroom', possibly with 'brawl'. The Japanese name is Kinogassa (キノガッサ), which may combine kinoko (mushroom) with kasa (a traditional hat or umbrella).
Design inspiration
Breloom seems to be based on an agaric mushroom, with a head shaped like a kasa hat. Bulbapedia also points to a boxing kangaroo for its stance and to dinosaurs for its claws, domed head and club tail. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Breloom evolves from Shroomish at level 23.
In the games
Breloom turns up in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire and is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Breloom debuted in 'A Shroomish Skirmish', where a swarm of Shroomish evolved after Team Rocket stole their food, and May's Combusken fought the leader hand to hand before declaring a truce. In 'A Windswept Encounter!', a wild Breloom fought Noibat over a Floette that did not return his feelings.
Fun facts
- Before Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Breloom could not learn Spore, and in Scarlet and Violet not until version 3.0.0, though a wild Tera Breloom with Spore could be found in West Province (Area Three).
- In the Pokémon Adventures chapter 'Brushing Past Breloom', it attacks Norman and is knocked out almost at once by his Vigoroth's Aerial Ace.
