Lore

Biology

Virizion is a stag-like quadruped, 2 m tall and 200 kg, mostly green with a white face, white hind legs and a white underside. Its long horns end in dull, curled points, a black blaze runs from nose to head, and a pink-tipped leaf grows on each side of its neck. Its lower legs look like boots with pink trim at the knee, and it has black hooves.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Virizion confounds opponents with swift, whirlwind-like movements before cutting them down. Bulbapedia says that in the legend of the Swords of Justice it ran fast to guard fellow Pokémon from flying sparks and embers, and that in the film 'Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice' it is shown as the most intelligent of the trio. It loves Virizion Treats from Snacksworth, who once met and talked with it.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat. In The Indigo Disk expansion for Scarlet and Violet it appears in Tagtree Thicket after Snacksworth gives you its treat. In Legends: Z-A it appears in Hyperspace Lumiose, in the Mega Dimension DLC, after a special scan.

Powers

Virizion cuts with Leaf Blade, Close Combat and Magical Leaf, heals with Synthesis and Giga Drain, and sharpens up with Swords Dance. Its only Ability is Justified. With base Speed 108 and a huge Special Defense it is a quick, bulky Grass and Fighting type.

Name origin

Virizion may combine viridian, a blue-green pigment colour, with possibly 'champion'. The Japanese name is Virizion (ビリジオン).

Design inspiration

Virizion is based on Aramis from The Three Musketeers, the group's best swordsman, and Bulbapedia adds that in the novels Aramis is also the vainest and most romantic of the four. Its head shape resembles a tricorne hat, and it looks like a gazelle-like antelope or a stag. Its Grass typing may nod to Aramis's real name, René d'Herblay, which contains herb.

In the games

Virizion is a Special Boss in Everspring Valley in Pokémon Rumble World. It first appeared in Black and White, where a single one waits in the Rumination Field of Pinwheel Forest, and in Black 2 and White 2 it is on Route 11. In the Battle Maison of the Generation VI games, Battle Chatelaine Morgan uses one in the Super Rotation Battle.

In the anime

Virizion's first appearance in the TV series was in 'The Mew from Here!', which revealed that Horace had caught one on his final Project Mew trial mission. It also appears as one of the Pokémon living in Laqua in 'The Pokémon Paradise of Laqua!'.

Fun facts

  • Virizion was the first Legendary Pokémon with the Grass type; Celebi and Shaymin, which came earlier, are Mythical.
  • Its base Special Defense of 129 is the highest of any Fighting type apart from Crowned Zamazenta, at 140.
  • The Paradox Pokémon Iron Leaves resembles Virizion, and it is said to be either a far-future relative or a counterpart from another timeline.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Virizion is the first of the trio to appear, ambushing Black and White in Pinwheel Forest and slicing up their clothes.
