Wiglett official artwork

Wiglett is a Water-type Pokémon, the Garden Eel Pokémon, number 960 (#0960) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 1.8 kg.

Wiglett, known as the Garden Eel Pokémon, is a Water type that looks just like Diglett. The Pokédex insists it is not a Diglett at all: the likeness seems to be an accident of adapting to similar surroundings.

How to pronounce Wiglett

Wiglett is pronounced WIG-lit. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Wiglett is a long, white eel, 1.2 m tall and 1.8 kg, that sits buried in sand so that just its head and a little of its body show. It has tiny dark blue eyes and a big round pink nose. Whatever its stated height, nobody knows how long it really is beneath the surface.

Behaviour

Wiglett is timid and cautious. The Pokédex says it smells a Veluza from about 20 m (just over 65 ft) away and ducks into the sand. Bulbapedia says it pops up out of the sand to feed.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives on beaches and in seas, burrowing into the sand, and Serebii lists the Beach biome. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the South, East, West and North Provinces and in 1-star Tera Raids.

Powers

Gooey slows any attacker that touches it, Rattled raises its Speed when hit by a Dark, Ghost or Bug move, and Sand Veil is hidden. It uses Water Gun, Aqua Jet, Wrap, Dig and Sucker Punch, and learns Throat Chop and Liquidation later. With 95 base Speed it is fast, but its HP and defences are tiny.

Name origin

Wiglett may combine 'wiggle', 'water' or 'white' with Diglett. The Japanese name is Umidigda (ウミディグダ), perhaps umi ('sea') plus Digda, Diglett's Japanese name.

Design inspiration

Wiglett's design builds on Diglett, which Shigeki Morimoto designed. It looks like a garden eel, with razor clams and tubifex worms as other possible influences, and its Diglett lookalike may play on convergent evolution, where unrelated animals independently develop similar bodies. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Wiglett evolves into Wugtrio at level 26, the same level at which Diglett becomes Dugtrio.

In the games

Players find Wiglett across Paldea's provinces in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted, and it is also a biome-dependent Pokémon in Pokémon GO. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Two Wiglett debuted in the Horizons episode 'Quaxly, We Can Do It', each belonging to a different Trainer.

Fun facts

  • Wiglett was revealed on 28 September 2022 in a mock webinar for the 'World Pokémon Ecological Society', which also introduced the idea fans call convergent species.
  • Bulbapedia says its base HP of 10 is the lowest of any Water Pokémon, tied with Kantonian and Alolan Diglett for the lowest of all Pokémon except Shedinja.
  • Of the species fans call convergent, Bulbapedia says only Wiglett has a base stat total different from its Diglett's.
  • Wiglett and its evolution simply fade in when sent out rather than dropping onto the field, as Diglett, Dugtrio, Sandygast and Palossand also do.
