Lore
Biology
Wugtrio is three long red eels sharing one home, a spiky black rock, and stands 1.2 m tall at 5.4 kg. Every head has tiny dark blue eyes and a big round white nose. Only the heads and parts of the bodies are ever seen, so nobody knows what the rest looks like inside the rock.
Behaviour
The Pokédex says Wugtrio has a vicious temperament, whatever its comical looks suggest: it coils its long bodies round prey and hauls it off to its den. Bulbapedia says it hides inside its rock when humans spot it.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says it lives on coastlines, and Serebii lists the Beach biome. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the North Province, West Province Area Two and 4-star Tera Raids.
Powers
Gooey slows attackers that touch it, Rattled raises its Speed after a Dark, Ghost or Bug hit, and Sand Veil is hidden. Its signature move is Triple Dive, which Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon can learn, backed by Aqua Jet, Liquidation, Sucker Punch and Throat Chop. With 100 base Attack and 120 Speed it is a fast, hard-hitting glass cannon with only 35 HP.
Name origin
Wugtrio may combine Wiglett, 'water' or 'wug' (a word for any worm-like creature) with Dugtrio. The Japanese name is Umitrio (ウミトリオ), perhaps umi ('sea') plus Dugtrio.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia reads Wugtrio as a garden eel, and its Dugtrio lookalike may play on convergent evolution. Giant tube worms and tubifex worms may also have influenced its silhouette. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Wugtrio evolves from Wiglett at level 26.
In the games
Wugtrio lives in the Beach biome of Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Kofu's Wugtrio debuted in the Horizons episode 'Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four'. In 'Nidothing Love!' it ended up with Zirc's ticket stuck to one of its heads, so he, Liko, Roy and Onia battled it to get the ticket back.
