Lore

Biology

Yanma is a large red insect with a short, wide thorax and a long, thin abdomen. It has six grey legs ending in two toes each, and its two pairs of transparent wings carry red bands. A bright green mask covers most of its face, and two spikes rise from its head. It is 1.2 m (3'11") long and weighs 38 kg (83.8 lbs). The Pokédex says its large eyes give it a full 360 degree view, so even prey behind it is seen.

Behaviour

Yanma is a skilful flier that can hover in one spot, stop suddenly and turn in mid-air. It is also territorial: the Pokédex says it flits about to guard its patch.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is forest, and Bulbapedia says wooded and swampy areas. In Scarlet and Violet it lives across Kitakami in The Teal Mask, in places such as Kitakami Road and Mossfell Confluence.

Diet

It hunts insects, spotting them with its all-round vision and chasing them down in flight.

Powers

Yanma has Speed Boost, which raises its Speed every turn, or Compound Eyes, which improves its accuracy; Frisk is hidden. It learns Air Cutter, Air Slash, Bug Buzz and Hypnosis, and with Quick Attack it is a fast, tricky attacker for a first-stage Pokémon.

Name origin

Yanma comes from the Japanese word 蜻蜓 yanma, meaning a hawker dragonfly, and so does its Japanese name, Yanyanma (ヤンヤンマ).

Design inspiration

Yanma looks like a dragonfly, perhaps a banded darter, and its size may nod to the prehistoric Meganeura griffinflies. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Yanma evolves into Yanmega when it levels up while knowing Ancient Power, which it learns at level 33. It had no evolution before Generation IV.

In the games

Yanma has no major story role, though players first met it in Gold and Silver. It appears in the Crimson Mirelands and Coronet Highlands in Legends: Arceus, is wild in Kitakami in Scarlet and Violet, and is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Yanma debuted in 'Wings n' Things', where Zachary Evans abandoned one that kept breaking glass; he later rescued it from Team Rocket. Jessie caught a Yanma in 'The Thief That Keeps on Thieving!'.
