Zygarde official artwork

Zygarde is a Dragon/Ground-type Pokémon, the Order Pokémon, number 718 (#0718) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 5 m tall and weighs 305 kg.

Zygarde is the Order Pokémon, a guardian of the ecosystem that is built from many small Cells commanded by a few Cores, and that can assemble as a fast dog-like 10% Forme, a serpentine 50% Forme or a giant humanoid Complete Forme. Fans call it, Xerneas and Yveltal the aura trio, with Zygarde as the Z.

How to pronounce Zygarde

Zygarde is pronounced ZY-gard. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

In its main 50% Forme Zygarde is a 5 m, 305 kg black and green serpent covered in glowing green hexagons. Bulbapedia says every form is made of Zygarde Cells and Cores, small gelatinous green blobs shaped a little like planarian flatworms. Cells have no will of their own; a Core acts as the brain, and a Zygarde can have up to five. When it runs out of power it splits back into Cells and Cores that scatter across the world.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Zygarde appears when the Kalos ecosystem falls into disarray, and that it is thought to monitor anyone who harms nature from deep in a cave. Bulbapedia describes it as a being that tries to correct excess and restore balance, staying out of fights unless the ecosystem is seriously threatened. It can ask humans for help.

Habitat

The Pokédex places it deep in a cave; Bulbapedia names Terminus Cave in Kalos and Resolution Cave in Alola. It cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet, and in Legends: Z-A a single Zygarde waits in Wild Zone 20 at Centrico Plaza.

Powers

Its Abilities are Aura Break and Power Construct. It is the only known Pokémon able to learn Land's Wrath, Thousand Arrows, Thousand Waves and Core Enforcer. The 10% Forme, assembled in emergencies, is 1.2 m tall, weighs 33.5 kg and has base Speed 115. A Zygarde with Power Construct becomes the Complete Forme, with base HP 216, when its HP falls below half; in Legends: Z-A every 10% or 50% Zygarde does this. Only the Complete Forme can Mega Evolve, and Mega Zygarde swaps Core Enforcer for Nihil Light.

Name origin

Zygarde starts with Z, following Xerneas and Yveltal, and may come from Greek zygōtos ('joined') or 'zygote', French garde ('guard') and Old Norse garðr ('enclosure' or 'realm'). The Japanese name is ジガルデ, romanised Zygarde.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia suggests the three formes may echo Loki's children in Norse myth: the wolf Fenrir for the 10% Forme, with its leash-like ribbon, the serpent Jörmungandr for the 50% Forme, and Hel for the Complete Forme. The Cells may be based on planarians and slime moulds. These are fan readings.

In the games

Introduced in X and Y, where one 50% Forme waits in Terminus Cave, and expanded in Sun and Moon with the 10% and Complete Formes, Zygarde Cells and Cores to collect, and the Reassembly Unit. In Legends: Z-A it is a major character, and Mega Zygarde appears in the base game. Cells and Cores are not catchable.

In the anime

Bonnie nicknamed a runaway Zygarde Core 'Squishy' in 'From A to Z!', where it first took its 10% Forme. The Complete Forme debuted in the film Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia notes that Zygarde comes last when Pokémon are listed alphabetically by English name.
  • Mega Zygarde has base Special Attack 216, the highest of any Pokémon.
  • The 50% Forme weighs exactly half of the Complete Forme's 610 kg, but the 10% Forme weighs 33.5 kg instead of the 61 kg a tenth would give.
  • The 10% and Complete Formes did not exist in the Generation VI games, yet Pokémon Bank and Pokémon HOME give them Generation VI Pokédex entries copied from the 50% Forme.
