Lore

Biology

Arctozolt is 2.3 m tall and weighs 150 kg. Its light blue body is topped with a snow-like patch and has blue flippers with white tips and spots, two yellow hands and a plesiosaur-style tail with a fin on top. The bird-like head has closed eyes, blue cheek spots and a runny nose.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Arctozolt had a hard time walking, and that its electricity comes from shaking the frozen upper half of its body. It also blames the Pokémon's slowness for its extinction.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lived on prehistoric seashores. Wild ones appear only in Max Raid Battles on Snowslide Slope in the Crown Tundra.

Powers

Arctozolt has Volt Absorb or Static, with Slush Rush hidden. It shares its signature move Bolt Beak with Dracozolt and adds Ice moves such as Blizzard, Icicle Crash and Freeze-Dry. Its mix of 100 Attack, 90 Special Attack and solid bulk makes it a mixed attacker, held back by a base Speed of only 55.

Name origin

Arctozolt may combine 'arctic' with 'volt' or 'jolt'. The Japanese name is Patchilldon (パッチルドン), which may blend pachipachi (crackling), 'chill' and -don, a common ending in the names of prehistoric animals taken from the Greek word for 'tooth'.

Design inspiration

Its upper half looks like a dromaeosaur and its lower half like a marine reptile such as a plesiosaur, mosasaur or ichthyosaur; Bulbapedia suggests the Ichthyosaurus statue at Crystal Palace Park in particular. The runny nose probably nods to how cold weather gives people one. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Arctozolt does not evolve. It is revived by combining a Fossilized Bird with a Fossilized Dino.

In the games

Arctozolt is revived by Cara Liss on Route 6 in Sword and Shield, the games that introduced it, from a Fossilized Bird and a Fossilized Dino. Scarlet, Violet and Legends: Z-A do not offer it.

In the anime

Goh's Arctozolt debuted in 'A Pinch of This, a Pinch of That!', restored from fossils in the Wild Area alongside Ash's Dracovish, and Goh caught it. It has made further appearances in Journeys.

Fun facts

  • In that debut episode Dracovish accidentally hit Arctozolt, which grew angry and iced over the ground, and Ash slipped and ended up on top of Dracovish.
  • In the anime Bray Zenn is the person who names the two Zolt species, Dracozolt and Arctozolt, while Cara Liss names the two Fish.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Cara Liss owns an Arctozolt and restores Dracozolt and Arctovish too, in 'Clip-Clop!! The King's Horse'.
