Dracozolt is a Electric/Dragon-type Pokémon, the Fossil Pokémon, number 880 (#0880) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Galar region. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 190 kg.

Dracozolt is a fossil Pokémon built from two different ancient animals: the small upper half of a bird joined to the huge lower half of a drake. The Pokédex says its electricity comes from the powerful muscles in its tail.

Lore

Biology

Dracozolt is 1.8 m tall and weighs 190 kg. Its small upper body is yellow, with a long neck, a bird-like head with closed eyes and red cheek spots, and wings shaped like lightning bolts. The lower body is pink and green, with striped legs, pink toes and a spiked tail. The Pokédex remarks that its upper body is tiny next to its lower half.

Behaviour

Canon says little about how it acts. The Pokédex says only that its mighty lower body made it unbeatable in ancient times.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat and describes an animal of ancient times. Wild ones appear only in Max Raid Battles on Snowslide Slope in the Crown Tundra.

Diet

Plants: the Pokédex says it died out after it used up all of its plant-based food.

Powers

Dracozolt has Volt Absorb or Hustle, with Sand Rush hidden. Its signature move is Bolt Beak, which doubles to 170 power if Dracozolt strikes first or the target has just switched in; only Dracozolt and Arctozolt can learn it. It also uses Thunderbolt and Dragon Rush. With base Attack 100 and a solid 90 in HP and Defense, it is a bulky physical attacker.

Name origin

Dracozolt may combine dracō, Latin for 'dragon', with 'volt' or 'jolt'. The Japanese name is Patchiragon (パッチラゴン), which may blend pachipachi, the sound of crackling, with 'dragon'.

Design inspiration

Hitoshi Ariga designed all four Galar fossil Pokémon, according to a tweet cited by Bulbapedia. They may be based on palaeontology's 'chimera' fossils, skeletons wrongly assembled from different animals, and on the scientifically inaccurate Crystal Palace Dinosaurs sculptures. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Dracozolt does not evolve. It is revived by combining a Fossilized Bird with a Fossilized Drake, and it has no gender and cannot breed.

In the games

Dracozolt is revived by Cara Liss on Route 6 in Sword and Shield, the games that introduced it, from a Fossilized Bird and a Fossilized Drake. Scarlet, Violet and Legends: Z-A do not offer it.

In the anime

Dracozolt appears as an image in 'A Pinch of This, a Pinch of That!', the episode where Ash's Dracovish and Goh's Arctozolt are revived. Arctovish appears there as an image too.

Fun facts

  • The four Galar fossils pair a Bird or Fish top with a Drake or Dino bottom, so Dracozolt shares its top with Arctozolt and its bottom with Dracovish.
  • Bulbapedia suggests that its inability to breed may nod to hybrid animals, which are born infertile.
  • All four Galar fossil Pokédex entries blame the Pokémon for its own extinction, which Bulbapedia reads as a nod to an outdated idea that dinosaurs doomed themselves by growing bigger and more sluggish.

The powerful muscles in its tail generate its electricity. Compared to its lower body, its upper half is entirely too small. (Shield)

In ancient times, it was unbeatable thanks to its powerful lower body, but it went extinct anyway after it depleted all its plant-based food sources. (Sword)
