Lore

Biology

Copperajah is a large, boxy, elephant-like Steel type, 3 m tall and 650 kg. Its body is dark green with a light teal belly; Bulbapedia reads Cufant's Pokédex entries as hinting that the green is tarnished copper, with bright untarnished copper showing on its face and in patterns on its ears, feet, trunk and back. Short blunt tusks, rocky skull lumps and a broad trunk with three claw-like points complete the look. The Pokédex says the trunk can crush giant rocks into powder and that the green skin resists water.

Behaviour

Copperajah lives in herds and is prideful and cantankerous; Bulbapedia says the more vibrant its skin, the prouder it is. According to the Pokédex, its kind arrived from a distant region ages ago to work alongside people.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says neither Copperajah nor Cufant is native to Galar or Paldea. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Paldea's North Province, around Casseroya Lake, Dalizapa Passage and Glaseado Mountain.

Powers

Its Ability is Sheer Force, which makes moves with extra effects 1.3 times stronger but removes those effects, or the hidden Heavy Metal. It slams with Heavy Slam, learned on evolving, and hits hard with Iron Head, Play Rough and Superpower. Gigantamax Copperajah rears up on its hind legs, is listed at 23 m tall, and the Pokédex says its trunk could level mountains; it alone can use G-Max Steelsurge, which sets a hazard that hurts each foe switching in. With 130 base Attack and 122 HP it hits like a lorry, but its Speed of 30 makes it painfully slow.

Name origin

Copperajah combines 'copper' with 'maharajah', the Indian title for a great king, and may also borrow gajah, the Malay and Indonesian word for elephant. The Japanese name is Daioudou (ダイオウドウ), which may blend daiō ('great king') with dō ('copper').

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Copperajah as possibly an Indian elephant with a backhoe's digging bucket for a trunk, citing Asia's history of working elephants, and notes the copper and bronze elephant statues of Indian and Thai art. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Cufant evolves into Copperajah at level 34.

In the games

Copperajah turns up around the Lake of Outrage and in Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield, the games that introduced it, and Wild Area News events in 2020 handed out Copperajah with the Gigantamax Factor. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 5 star Tera Raid Battles. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Rose's Copperajah debuted in 'Sword and Shield: From Here to Eternatus!', taking on Leon and Ash and then pairing up with Rose's Ferrothorn, and it lost in the next episode. Poppy's Copperajah, nicknamed Rajah, fights alongside her Tinkaton against Dot and Iono in 'Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four'.

Fun facts

  • With the Heavy Metal Ability its weight would be 1,300 kg, which Bulbapedia notes is past the 999.9 kg limit normally placed on a Pokémon's weight.
  • Raichu's Pokédex entry in Legends: Arceus mentions Copperajah, even though Copperajah cannot be obtained in that game.
  • Its German name, Patinaraja, blends 'patina', the green film on aged copper, with 'maharaja'.
