Lore

Biology

Cufant is 1.2 m tall and weighs 100 kg, a roughly round elephant with a copper body, four stout legs with a single nail each, a domed head and a short bobtail. Its trunk ends in a spoon or shovel shape, used for digging and for carving out rock and ore. It is tangerine-orange with a lighter underside, with green tarnish patches on its trunk, skull, back and nail rims, and behind each eye.

Behaviour

Cufant is gentle and helps people with heavy work, which Bulbapedia says is why it and Copperajah were brought to Galar and Paldea. It travels in herds, and in the mornings the herd heads into caves in search of ore.

Habitat

The Pokédex has it in caves, searching for ore. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in mines in Paldea's East Province Area Three.

Diet

Ore and hard rock, which it carves off in chunks with the tip of its trunk, according to the Pokédex.

Powers

Its Ability is Sheer Force, which makes moves with extra effects hit 1.3 times harder but drops those effects, or the hidden Heavy Metal, which doubles its weight. It digs with Dig and High Horsepower, and bashes with Iron Head, Superpower and Play Rough. Base HP 72 and Attack 80 are its best stats.

Name origin

Cufant may combine Cu, the chemical symbol for copper, with 'elephant' or 'infant'. The Japanese name is Zoudou (ゾウドウ), which may blend zō ('elephant') with dō ('copper' or 'child').

Design inspiration

Cufant resembles a young Indian elephant whose trunk ends in a spade, and may also draw on elephant statues in Indian and Thai art. Its green patches probably reflect copper oxidising in air and weather. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Cufant evolves into Copperajah at level 34.

In the games

Players find Cufant at Bridge Field in Sword and Shield, the games that introduced it. In Scarlet and Violet it can be found in 2 star Tera Raid Battles, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

In a flashback in 'From Here to Eternatus!', Cufant appears as Rose's Pokémon, and the same Pokémon is later seen as his Copperajah. In 'The Bittersweet Truth', a Trainer's Cufant beats Mitchell's Vanillite.

Fun facts

  • The logo of the Galar Minerals company shows a Cufant head.
  • Its English category, Copperderm, may combine 'copper' with 'derm' (skin) or 'pachyderm', so it could mean 'copper skin'.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Rose's Cufant debuts in 'Toasty!! Battle Against Toxapex' and evolves into Copperajah before 'Teary!! The Voice of the Master'.
