Lore

Biology

Axew is a bipedal, grey-green dragon, 0.6 m tall and 18 kg, with pale, straight tusks jutting from both sides of its mouth. A tall, slightly curved horn rises from the back of its head, dark ovals ring its red eyes, and a forest-green collar circles its neck. The Pokédex says a broken tusk regrows quickly, and each regrowth leaves the new tusk harder, sharper and sturdier.

Behaviour

Axew uses its tusks for almost everything. It scores gashes in trees to mark its territory, and Axew play by knocking their large tusks together. The Pokédex says peculiar teeth marks on a boulder or tree mean an Axew is likely nearby.

Habitat

The Pokédex says Axew builds its nests in the ground. In Scarlet and Violet it ranges across Paldea's North, South and West Provinces, and The Indigo Disk adds it to the Canyon and Polar Biomes.

Diet

Berries, which it crushes with its tusks. The Pokédex says this is also how Axew test each other's strength.

Powers

Axew's Abilities are Rivalry, which boosts its damage against Pokémon of the same gender and cuts it against the opposite gender, and Mold Breaker, with Unnerve hidden. It learns Dragon Claw, Crunch, Outrage and Dragon Dance by level. With a base Attack of 87 it hits hard for its size, but its Special Attack of 30 is tiny.

Name origin

Axew may combine 'axe' with 'chew' or 'hew' (to chop). The Japanese name is Kibago (キバゴ), which may blend kiba ('fang' or 'tusk'), ago ('jaw') and 'dragon'.

Design inspiration

The Axew line looks dinosaur-based. Axew's crest may echo a hadrosaur, Saurolophus in particular, and its tusks seem to be modelled on axes. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Axew becomes Fraxure at level 38, and Fraxure becomes Haxorus at level 48.

In the games

Axew first appeared in Black and White, where it lives in Mistralton Cave. In Scarlet and Violet it can be caught in the wild and in 3-star Tera Raid Battles, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Iris's Axew debuted in 'In The Shadow of Zekrom!' with one big goal, to reach the mighty Haxorus stage, which it did before 'Thrash of the Titans!'.
