Lore
Biology
Bellsprout is 0.7 m tall and weighs 4 kg. Its head is a yellow bell with pink lips and small black eyes, a thin brown stem for a body, and a green leaf on each side. Its roots look like feet and work as feet. The stem is long and so flexible that it can sway aside from even strong attacks.
Behaviour
Bellsprout reacts the instant it senses movement nearby, lashing out with its thin vines. To rehydrate it plants its roots deep in the ground, and while rooted it cannot run from an attacker.
Habitat
It prefers hot, humid places, and Bulbapedia puts it in temperate forests and jungles.
Diet
It traps and eats small bugs with its vines, according to the early Pokédex entries.
Powers
Its Abilities are Chlorophyll, which doubles its Speed in strong sunlight, and the hidden Gluttony, which makes it eat a held Berry sooner. It spits a corrosive fluid that the Pokédex says can melt iron, and learns Vine Whip, Acid, Sleep Powder and Poison Powder. Its base Attack of 75 is decent for a first stage, but its Defense is only 35.
Name origin
Bellsprout may combine 'bell' and 'sprout'. The Japanese name is Madatsubomi (マダツボミ), possibly from mada tsubomi ('still in bud').
Design inspiration
Atsuko Nishida designed Bellsprout and its relatives. Carnivorous pitcher plants, especially the Nepenthes genus, may have inspired it, as may bellflowers. The mandrake, a plant with a man-shaped root, fits the Pokédex rumour about its bud.
Evolution notes
Bellsprout evolves into Weepinbell at level 21.
In the games
Since Generation I it has been a Blue exclusive among the international Red and Blue pair. In Scarlet and Violet it is not wild in Paldea, but it can be traded in, and The Teal Mask DLC adds it to Kitakami. In Legends: Z-A it appears across several districts of Lumiose City and in Wild Zones 5 and 10, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
In 'The Fourth Round Rumble', Jeanette Fisher's Bellsprout defeated Ash's Bulbasaur and Pikachu, then fell to Muk. Goh catches a Bellsprout in Journeys, in 'Beyond Chivalry… Aiming to be a Leek Master!'.
