Weepinbell is the Flycatcher Pokémon, a plant that hangs from branches by a hook on its rear and sprays poison powder on whatever wanders too close. It is full of acid yet never melts, because it oozes a protective fluid.

Lore

Biology

Weepinbell is 1.0 m tall and weighs 6.4 kg, with a yellow bell-shaped body, a wide mouth with pink lips, round eyes and a large green leaf on each side. A hooked stem rises over its eyes. The Pokédex says its leaves work as cutters, and that it slices up prey too big for its mouth before eating every morsel.

Behaviour

Weepinbell disguises itself as an ordinary plant and waits for prey to wander close. Then it sprays Poison Powder to freeze the victim and finishes it with a splash of acid. At night it hooks itself over a tree branch to sleep, and if it moves about it may wake up on the ground.

Habitat

Bulbapedia places it in temperate forests and jungles.

Diet

It eats whatever moves within reach, dissolving prey in its strong acid.

Powers

Its Abilities are Chlorophyll and the hidden Gluttony. It matches its Pokédex lore with Poison Powder and Acid, and adds Sleep Powder and Razor Leaf. Base Attack 90 and Special Attack 85 make it a balanced middle stage.

Name origin

Weepinbell may combine 'weeping' and 'bell'. The Japanese name is Utsudon (ウツドン), possibly from utsubokazura ('pitcher plant') and perhaps utsu, meaning depression or melancholy.

Design inspiration

Weepinbell appears to be based on carnivorous pitcher plants.

Evolution notes

Weepinbell evolves from Bellsprout at level 21, and a Leaf Stone turns it into Victreebel.

In the games

A Generation I original, Weepinbell is not wild in Scarlet and Violet's Paldea but can be traded in, and The Teal Mask DLC adds it to Mossfell Confluence in Kitakami. In Legends: Z-A it appears in Wild Zone 13 of Rouge District, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Weepinbell debuted in 'The School of Hard Knocks' under a Trainer named Joe, and fell to one Water Gun from Misty's Starmie despite resisting it. Erika's Weepinbell fought Ash's Charmander in 'Pokémon Scent-sation!'.

Fun facts

  • The Spaceworld '97 demo suggests Weepinbell once had a different evolution called Tsubomitto (ツボミット), which evolved using a Poison Stone.
  • In the Horizons anime, Brassius makes a mug shaped like a Weepinbell.
  • Pokémon Sleep notes that Weepinbell sometimes sleeps on undisturbed even after falling to the ground.
